TGEA1.8.1 and the Torque Books

Can anyone comment on the relevance of the two torque books and TGEA 1.8.1 and T3d ( as we know it ) ...

I am considering getting both books but do not want to have a reference that is too far out of date .

thanks

All three books, actually I think there are four now, while for older versions of the engine, can still be quite useful. There are some misprints in all of them, and a few mistakes (bugs) in the code here and there. But everything that I learned in the old 3d Game Programming All-in-One, which were written pre TGE 1.5.2 was still valid in TGEa.... and more than likely Torque 3D also.

They're a worthwhile introduction to the Torque and well worth the money

They are the only coherent narratives yet available for a newcomer. Don't expect any of the examples to apply directly to any of the standing engines without a good deal of bloodying yourself banging your head into a wall--nonetheless, they are valuable overviews of what the engine(s) do and provide hooks into where to begin looking in the source and scripts.
