Torque Game Launcher?

by Jerane Alleyne · in Torque Game Engine · 11/29/2002 (12:03 pm) · 5 replies

Just something I was curious about :)

Have you GG guys every considered, that maybe after more Torque games come out and get a firm establishment, do you think it might be helpful to have a game launcher and server browser for torque games? I'm not talking anything intrusive like RealArcade's software, just something that can scan for Torque games, display games on a server, maybe even a chat room or two.

I was considering looking into what would be involved in getting support for using Gamespy Arcade for our game, started thinking that a similar app for Garagegames might be cool. It might make things like game patches and finding general info for individual games helpful, and a good place to sponsor events and get news, perhaps even hook up the e-commerce stuff.

Sound like a good idea or too much hooha?

:)

I don't like the idea... the more programs like that people have to use the less they like it =)
however I do like how gamespy lets you have an ingame server browser with their software... but that's already in place in Torque so no benefit there =)

I think Dave Wyand runs something like this at gnometech.com.

I hate gamespy, its just annoying. What if something happens to GameSpy?

Hmmm? Did I just hear my name? :o)

My master/game server monitor at www.gnometech.com does indeed allow you to view what TGE servers are active and how many people are on them. If you're interested in who's doing what across multiple games, then this method works out well. However, this is only a portion of what Jerane is after, I believe.

The question that I'd like answered (and as my game isn't far enough along yet, I haven't asked it myself) is if the GG Master Server is intended for hosting released games. If so, then we have the beginnings of a central repository to which a 'client' just needs to query (such as an expanded version of my own game server monitor). From there, you move onto patching and chat...

Hey David,

I actually had Gnometech in mind when thinking about a game launcher >_<

Nothing like this would be mandatory, just manager more than anything else. List active servers to Torque games or demos you might have, have the ability to launch them, have a chat, etc.

I admit I like Gamespy (won't pay for it, but I'll use it), its just that a lot of the players there are evil (exceptions of course, but when America's Army came out, you'd never know). Something like this wouldn't have to be mandatory, but might make a good addition.
