Character creation

For a school project (12th class , IT-assistant) I had the idea of making an easy game in Torque (We are a team of 3 people).
My question is now how to create character models (possibly animated?!) with cheap, or even better
free, products because e.g. 3DSMax and Maya are much too expensive for a student.
I have experiences in 3D modelling and I'm not afraid of learning new things.
If there is the possibility of using a free/cheap program are there any tutorials or tips available?
Hoping for your help,
Timo

If you're not afraid to learn, I would suggest Blender . . .
www.blender.org/download/get-blender/
It is not an easy app to learn, but it is powerful, it does have an export path to Torque and it's free.
Another possibility is Shaper . . .
inversesoftware.com.au/Shaper/Download.php
It is fairly easy to learn, and works very well with Torque. It isn't free, but the price is very reasonable.
Other alternatives include MilkShape, GameSpace, Silo, and many others. These options are not free, however, but relatively inexpensive.
My own preferred pipleline is to go from Silo to Shaper and then out to Torque. It works pretty well most of the time.
Another option is to Houdini Apprentice HD from here . . .

Again, this one is not free, but it seems to have the full blessings of the people who make the Torque Game Engine. At least from what I can tell. :)
I hope this helps.
