Welcome to the Indie Game Developer Survey!
My name is David Michael. I am co-owner of Samu Games, an independent game development company.
This survey is part of my research for an upcoming book about independent game development. The goal is to gather information about "indie" game developers and how they do what they do.
What's in it for you?
* Information about other indies! If you provide your email address, a summary of all the results will be sent to you, so you can see how you compare to all the other independent game developers out there.
* Information about yourself! Sometimes we all need to stop and think about what we're doing--and why we're doing it.
* A chance to win free software! If you provide your name and email address, and answer every question on the survey, you will be eligible to win a free copy of The Journal--normally $39.95. I will give away 10 copies of The Journal, with the winners drawn at random from those eligible.
Yes, this is a long survey. If you would prefer, you can skip all questions marked (Optional) and you will still be eligible for the free software drawing. Also, your "short answer" responses only need to be 1-2 sentences most of the time. Unless you want to write more, of course. =)

I certainly don't intend to exclude anyone who considers themself an indie.
I am interested in feedback from all indies.
I know what I've done, and how I've handled things in the past, on several indie projects. To go along with that, I know a number of other indie developers (Dextery, Garage Games, Lupine Games, Tams11, and so on) and I've discussed business with all of them at some point or the other. But I also know that there are thousands of indies out there, quite possibly doing things 'way different. So I tried to structure the survey to cover as much territory as I could, without taking days and days to fill out.
If you don't mind my asking, what do you think I overlooked? What would you like to add?

oh its not that you overlooked anything, but you had certain questions labelled "optional" but most not. Many of the not optional questions pertained only to what a project leader or company owner/manager would be able to answer.

In Section 3 (Minding the Store), just answer as best you can.
In Section 4 (Building the Team), just answer "No" to the first question if you've never had more than just yourself working on a project and skip down to Section 5.
