TGB TDN News: February 2008

A special offer - this month only! Write a TDN article and get 1 extra day free!

Alright, perhaps this offer is arriving a bit too late, but check back in 4 years for the next "get one free" promotion. February was a bit of a slow month on updates but here they are:

As always, the TGB Hub can be found here. If you're not logged in to TDN, you can do that by clicking on the log in link in the upper right hand corner.

Tutorials
Asteroids Tutorial - Updated this month to include the final 2 sections on music/sound effects and setting up a title screen, the rather large tutorial series is now complete. Covers a wide range of topics and is a good continuing point for those who finished the tutorials included with TGB.

Splash Screen Tutorial - A short tutorial that covers using a behavior to turn a static sprite into a splash screen. Great for displaying your company logo and the GG/TGB logo during the game startup sequence.

Behaviors
Behavior Listing - Only 1 new behavior added this month: Mouse Over Cursor Change. Head over to the behavior section to check this or any of the other contributed behaviors out - perhaps they can help speed up your game development.

Resources
Resource Listing - New this month is the addition of the shooterArt resource, which will be useful for those wishing to do the old "basic" tutorial that is now located in the archive. Also added is a particlesArt resource, which improves upon the existing resource included in TGB by providing additional images and animations for 59 different particle effects.

That's it for this month! Feel free to use this post for questions, comments on existing content or to make suggestions for what you would like to see on TDN (but please keep in mind this is all community created and supported).

Mike,

Thanks for the heads up! Are you "in charge" of TDN in any way?

In any case, if you write a tutorial for TGB you're a cool guy in my book.

Thanks!

To answer your question, no I am not in charge of TDN. My goals were simply to create a well organized, pleasant visual layout for the TGB section and to add a few up to date tutorials in the hope that others would be inspired to contribute as well. I'm certainly no expert in game creation/scripting, so it's in my own interests as well to see people share their knowledge.

It's a bit unrealistic to expect a flood of tutorials as it really is a time consuming endeavor to write one, but behavior sharing is rather quick and easy and not surprisingly the most content rich section at the moment. I think if people find the TDN content useful, then they'll hopefully be more likely to contribute at some point as well.

Get one day free? I'm not sure I am following that.

It's a leap year, so February had 29 days--one day free!

Oh, ok, I get it now. I think this cold I have isn't helping me any.
