Web Game Business Model (QuakeZero/Battlefield Heroes)

It appears that the web isn't being overlooked by anyone. Caught this over on Blues News:

EA's new web based business model

Quote:Battlefield Heroes is leading EA's new web-focused free to download, free to play business model which generates revenue through advertising and micro-transactions.

It is pretty much like everyone else getting into this... play for free and have somewhat limited content with some ads to view. Buy additional content for points (ie. microtransactions) and/or remove the ads with your purchase.

I have a feeling that Battlefield Heroes is going to be Windows/IE only... it'll be interesting to see Quake Zero which I'm guessing will run on Windows/OSX/Linux/IE/Safari/Firefox.

Our next game is totally about the web and social networking... it is pretty exciting to see some thoughts validated by industry trends. I think this is a good thing for independents. It gets people used to buying games under this model... and is one more step away from the iron grip of retail.

As far as I understand, Battlefield Heroes will not use the IE as plataform, will be downloadable. Free, but with an intaller, pretty orthodox in the installation thing.

Right, it'll be interesting to see how the distribution and microtransactions are handled.

I think web integration with games will become a standard feature. That's whether you're publishing as a IE/Safari/Firefox plugin on Windows/OSX/Linux (still requiring game/installer downloads of course) or embedding a web browser into your application (Apple's Webkit or Mozilla's Gecko).

The web is just too good for commerce/social networking/presentation and can't really be ignored.

Sorry forgot the thread.

Yes indeed, the web its already the backbone of the gamming transactions, and social networks, and that tendence seems to advance, as consoles are also using it. Future gamming plataforms of all types will be extremely integrated with the web, as the modern web services and developments evolve (web 2.0).

Its also curious how many different paths converge on this idea. GG with IA, Id with QZ, EA will not be exactly using the browser as the plataform, but the web as distribution plataform... for a *free* BH game. And that without counting the innumerable mmogs out there, that were the first ones on using the web as a direct tool for gamers, with uses that vary from create an account to buy items, to inventory management, to lvl system.

And btw, tell me(us) something more about your next project! ;)
