People not having access to the source for other games/apps haven't stopped them from abusing it. This may make it easier for them to do it, but it also give the people who are wanting to make it better improve upon it as well. It could very well be that many new coders who could potentially have some good skill & interest in this might help make a better client. Time will tell.

relatedly, folks might be interested in libsecondlife, an open-source project to reverse-engineer both client and back-end of SL.
