How to recompile engine/host game

by John Miller · in General Discussion · 01/07/2007 (10:23 pm) · 19 replies

How would one go about recompiling the source code for the engine after I modify it.....also how would I save a game I make, send it to a friend, and host it as a multiplayer game. Ty in advance.

TDN has a great compiled list of tutorials and things begginers should read.

The first step is actually owning the product. You must own a license to the engine and source code in order to be able to compile it.

I've checked TND, and didn't find either of those. Is there a link to either, or can anyone point me in the direction for where those would be, either on gg forums or tnd?

To recompile the engine get something similar to visual C++ express and load the project into it, go into build.

As far as getting a multi-player game working with a friend, I don't know if anyone has gotten that working yet, I've searched myself and haven't found a way to do it.

The TDN article that explains how to compile is in the TGE section, you must own TGE to access that article. Good luck finding help on this forum with your pirated copy. The only way to redeem yourself is to buy TGE.

1. As Jeff noted, you need to own the product to compile the source.
2. Go through the TDN articles (which you can access when you are a licensed owner of the product) to get Visual Studio 2005 Express working.
3. Are you hosting on a private network or broadcasting over the internet?

If you don't have a pirated copy, then you must be using the demo...which you cannot recompile.

With the full 1.5 engine, how hard or what is the process of making a game you make playable against a friend?

You can play with a friend in the demo out of the box.

But it is impossible to answer how hard it is to make a game because that it entirely dependent on the game that you want to make. Some are easier than others, but making a game in any engine will require some hard work.

1. Start TGE with starter.fps
2. Start Mission...
3. Host Multiplayer.

Once in,
1. Have them Join Server...
2. Refresh List.
3. Join Server.

To get your lvl inside just go to the folder ( your games one ) go to data/missions/then copy your missions .ter and .mis file ( the .mis file sais its an torquescript file ) and then paste it into starter.fps data/missions folder hope that helped.

Getting a wee off topic.

Did you finish reading the manual, the TDN, the books and do a search on it first? And no that's not being mean.. it's a roadmap or... just say I put a steak on your plate now be good and eat it up...

I read the getting started manual, did a search, didn't find anything in 3dGPAI1, TND is pretty hard to find anything unless you have the link (but yes I searched anyways). Anyways, is there a way to host a non-starter.fps game that you make?
