TGB Pro Upgrade cost
by Jason Fox · in Torque Game Builder · 10/08/2006 (8:02 pm) · 7 replies
I purchased TGB a couple of months ago and have been very pleased with it. However, I am looking at upgrading to the Pro lciense, so that I can gain access to the source code, but it costs $45 more than if I would have bought the Pro license to begin with. This does not seem fair, since I already shelled $100 for TGB binary. Why not just charge the $150 difference in the cost instead of $195? Can someone from Garage Games answer this please? Thanks

Indie (binary only version) = 100$
Indie Pro (with source ) = 250$
Upgrading from Indie to the Indie Pro version = 195$
Therefore, an already existing customer of the binary version, is penalized an extra 45$
Since I paid my 100$ and liked the product, and want to start messing around more seriously with the source code, I pay out, 195$ to do the upgrade, putting me at a total of 295$ and I have the equivalent of the 250$ product.
I just don't see how the bundle argument is useful here.
I do understand it for the 250$ (binary w/source) vs 100$ (binary only).

You're looking at it upside down. TGB Pro costs $295. If you buy it all at once then they give you a $45 discount. You aren't paying extra to add source later, you're just not getting the discount. Start checking around at other software suites. You may find a very few that offer upgrades totalling the discounted price. The majority will not allow you to buy basic and step up to full later without paying some sort of lost "opportunity cost" for buying it all outright.

As is stands now the binary version is pretty useless. What you may want to consider is adding a 30day period where if you buy the binary version and discover that you need source within 30days, you can upgrade for the price of $150 and not $195.

No!! The problem is that GG does not provide the resources necessary to make an informed decision about whether or not you need source. In most cases owning source should only be necessary when you are doing something that requires some serious modifications i.e like real-time networking. However after perusing the private forums you soon discover that SOURCE is very necessary to do some of the more rudimentary things around here like MouseOver for Gui button. As is stands now the binary version is pretty useless. What you are using as a general reason is a very specific reason for you, if you would've asked then you would've gotten that answer, that you needed source to extend the networking code.
For quite a few people and many types of game you do not need source.

If this was such a serious matter to you now as it was then you could've sent an e-mail to anyone at GG (and it would be forwarded to me or someone else on the TGB Dev Team) and we could clarify any specifics for you. What you are using as a general reason is a very specific reason for you, if you would've asked then you would've gotten that answer, that you needed source to extend the networking code.

I do not want networking, The thing that I really need is to have the mouseover for gui buttons fire so I can change the cursor. I assumed this was part of the standard engine but later found that a source mod is required to acheive this simple task.

If you disagree which features should be included in the binary version that is the very reason we have a Pro version. Very good games can be made with the binary version.

As Ben pointed out, the real cost of TGB Pro is $295, but if you buy both the binary and source versions at the same time, we give a $45 bundle discount. This is very standard practice. If you disagree which features should be included in the binary version that is the very reason we have a Pro version. Most products offer a bundle price at a discount if you buy a multi version of software all at once vs. seperately. It is a very common pricing structure and may seem like your paying more, but on the flip side if you decide to buy TGP Pro outright (which is the packaging of everything in TGB plus Pro features like source included) then you actually are saving money. It's simply a bundle price in which it makes sense to let those who buy the bundle together that is TGB Pro at a cheaper price than buying it seperately.
