In need of programmers and others

by Brian Irvin · in General Discussion · 10/07/2006 (3:24 pm) · 51 replies

Please do not flame me for this, but i do need some programmers talented in making games with toque+mmo kit, or java games in 3d. I am in the process of designing an mmo game something like galaxys but different. I look to include ground battles whether it be rpg style or fps style with air and space combat and seemless zoning from planet to space when flying your own ship. I would like players to land any where in the world except illogical place such as landing on water which is a given. Player houses and cities is something else i would like to include but maybe have it limitited so the worlds dont get over crowded. heres an over view. "Edonia Online will be a cross platform MMO game combining well known races from fantasy games along with some new ones. Edonia takes place in the future where the human race is finally able to traverse the galaxy. They have discovered that earth is not the only planet with intelligent beings. There are in fact races only before seen in tales of fantasy." So far thats what i have as far as the game design doc goes. I am kinda trying to decide whether or not to use mydreamrpg mmo kit for this because i am not sure if it is capable. I have one person willing to help with programming but isnt realy able to help out alot because of his busy schedule. I can handel doing most of the artwork as for skinning im still trying to do that, and textures is kinda hard as well animating i could probaly do but im not sure. Im not asking anyone to make a game for me i am asking for people who are willing to get together as a team. I am straight up no programmer and probaly never will be one. Havin said that one big big big thing about this game is that i want it to be playable on macs, linux based computers, and windows based. I am also looking for sound people, maybe some more artists to kinda take of a load for me, definatly some pogrammers. As for hardware goes i only have 1 web server with win server 2003 web edition, which i may switch to SUSE linux or any other stable yet free OS which is one reason im wanting to kinda use linux for servers. I will also need some people to help me make a website for the game though i could probaly do that my self, but i dont want it to look like crap i want it to kick ass just like the game i plan on designing. ok now ill shut up and wait for replys lol, please no flaming me. and it is ok if my other posts get deleted this is the one id realy like to stay up.

It is sad to see that people believe they will get flamed because of asking for help. It should not be this way Brian, and I hope you get help. I could not for the life of me read your post though, you should format it into sections. That is hard on the eyes.

It would probably help you if you included the answer to these questions:

1) What you have you done before? This will help us gauge how likely your project is to succeed.

2) What will YOU do on the team? Why would someone help you build your game, rather than build their own?

3) How long do you think this project will take, and what is the timeline for difference pieces of the project?

4) How much funding do you have, and where does it come from? (i e, mortgaging your house, angel investors, saving your allowance, etc)

5) What compensation are you paying for people helping you build your game?

It would also help if you formatted your post using paragraphs, so that it's easier to figure out which sentences go together, and which start a new train of thought.

Ok answer to question 1. modeling mostly. 2.mostlikely making models and ui graphics, also the design doc which im curently working on and maybe website. 3. i am hoping to have most of the design doc done by late this week at which point i will work on concept art. as for how long development will take I dont know it greatly depends on how talented and good the team is. 4. no funding what so ever so it will have ot be people with tge, and the mmo kit. 5. at time of release team members will receive equal shares of profets, and free copy of game. Unfortunatly i am unable to pay anyone until then which yes will probaly limit those who are willing.

I have a server that i can use as a demo server as we test the game i am looking to but stuff from tiger direct and new egg and build my own server/servers more than likely runing Suse Linux since im trying to get away from windows.

So, to get this straight:

1) You haven't actually shipped any released game or demo of any sort yet?

2) You're trying to make a real MMO game, with a massive world full of content?

3) You offer nothing except a lot of work to people who might join?

And you expect people to take their own time and support you in your work, rather than working on their own dream games, why, exactly? What's in it for the people who join?

Specifically, you talk a whole lot about YOUR needs, as in taking the weight of content off YOUR back. Well, why should anyone else care?

The same reason anyone else makes games, because the want to. As for the rewards its the same after you get done prgoramming any other game just on a massive scale. For some reason i new this was going to happen but oh well. And hell i dont care if anyone cares, but it would be nice for some peoople to actualy help me out to make a dream of mine come true instead of staying up in my freaking head. And yes 1-3 is correct. And yes i do expect some people to help me instead of flamming me to a point just for asking for help. Hell its not my bloddy fault im not programmer

Brain, work on finishing your Design Doc first and get that "out there". Your doc will do a lot of the talking for you in regards to:
1. what the game is all about and what makes it different (or not)
2. what is being modded on the base engine (specifics on what the game needs coded/scripted)
3. characters and environments and how many
4. game play

I would then work on the project yourself to show people how serious you are. Get it started. I know you're serious but so is everyone else here. People become sceptical about how "serious" someone is because too many times people drop projects they start. Why?
a) they get bored
b) they get discouraged (it takes time to learn to make games - YEARS in fact)
c) they get overwhelmed by the scope of their first project (take a smaller byte)
d) life intrudes

People think starting with a MMO is crazy. Perhaps. What George Lucas did when he realized his first film was WAY TOO BIG to do, he decided to work on a small part of it. That was the first Star Wars film back in '77. Think about that :)

Ask for specific help as you need it - let's say, a character design or a piece of code - and build the/your game.

People will critique (criticize) your project but don't take the defensive (most important - don't think of it as being flamed). Listen to the critique and if it's valid, take it and change what you're doing; if it's not - DON'T.

Good luck and post your design doc when you have it ready.

(apologies for such a long winded response)

Who are you saying is flaming you? I am trying to help you by asking constructive questions to clarify your proposition to the community, because it doesn't seem clear enough yet that you're likely to get any takers. If you don't want help, then just say so.

No one so far. I just dont like being told that something cant be done. Yes i know MMO games are a pain to program. Yes it is hard to work when your not gonna get payed until the game is published and even then its iffy. I was willing to take that chance with my friend i met on here when i was helping him out. Unfortunatly he tabbled his idea for the time being, but i do hope that once i get my design doc completed it will make more since. Untill then please be patient with me and help me when it is completed I am not one to give up it isnt in my familie's nature the only way im gonna table the idea is if i lose the team. that i promise you

The biggest reason everyone is skeptical of someone coming in making an mmo for their first game is:
a) Requires a TON of time and assets, both programming and art
b) require a lot of money to get rolling, mostly for server costs.

Dont take this the wrong way, but while you refine your idea for this game, maybe you should make a simpler demo that gets the point across and shows you're serious about it, so when you get the manpower to work on your mmo, everyone will feel better that you wont just drop out on them.

Not saying dont make the game, i'm just saying get some stuff out there to get people's attention and trust(and perhaps a bit of cash to put at your main game. :p )

Ok i have decided to buy the mmo kit to help speed up the process. What would you sugest for server specs on the hardware more than likely i will be running Suse Linux unless someone else has a better sugetstion. Also I will be looking for people knoledgeable in the mmo kit and torque I am going to work on the design doc some more tonight probaly allready got the story done or most of it atleast. I look for having most of it done thursday friday i am having surgery so im not sure how much work im gonna be doing then depends on how druged they have me to get my wisdom teeth cut out lol.

Hey Brian, is your game futuricstic/modern? I thought it was at first but your post about neandrathals made me think it was fanticy.

If it is futuricstic/modern I'd be glad to model some vehicles for you. (I can't do organic stuff such as people/plants though)

I'll need you to send me concept art so I know what to make.

Please tell me if your interested.

Ok cool richard its going to be futuristic mixed with typical fantasy races the neanderthal is jsut something i added since there is no game i know of off hand that has one. Dont feel to bad about not able to do people i cant either :P. I am going ot try to get my design doc before i work on concept. Plus im going to try to get a web site going. i will keep you updated as much as i can if you want you can give me ur msn, aim, yahoo messenger sn or email adress. I will probaly start working on some models once i finish the design doc but right now thats the main point i want to get done with is the design document and concept.

I will need alot of ships and some of them will alow players to walk around in them like galaxies. If everyhting works out like i want it will be better than galaxies with a hell of alot less bugs and less lame with the changes. I will also need houses and other buildings, ships, lots of weapons. maybe some planets to and space debree .

An update for this post I will most likely going to use the mmo kit im jsut not sure what version yet if we go with titus we will need to get TSE which ive read reviews saying it has a stability issue, but if we go with the standard mmo kit it onyl requires tge which im sure everyone atleast has that.

I have finaly decided to use MMo kit with tge when tse and titus become morestable i will then probaly do a major update to the system which hopefuly then we will have enough revinue to boost it even more. The document is finished just a few more things and time for my Assistant Designer to look over it then i will post a link to it. It will be in Microsoft word format.

Jeff and "hplus" would yall be willing to possibly be programmers for this project i allready have an artist willing to help me with models, however im still trying to find someone who can make very good character models. Which I kinda haave trouble with and my artist that said he couldnt do organic objects. Thanks for the sugestions and patience with me
