GG Question before purchasing C4

by Morrie · in General Discussion · 10/02/2006 (10:55 am) · 10 replies

I currently have a code to purchase C4 for $100, but I'm wondering once I do either TGE 1.5 or Constructor will be released. I would rather spend my money Constuctor or 1.5. The code is good till for 5 more hours.

this always happens to me, and usually when I spend the money the other thing is released with in the next week or so.

The thing about C4 it will not run on all computer, so think about it. I just tested it on some computers and high-end at that and it only ran on one of them.

I doubt that Constructor will be released soon, but TGE 1.5 seems to be right around the corner.

@Morrie

Let me preface this with my support for GG. I like Torque and think that it is a solid, well-tested product. But,

You'll get burned if you wait for GG forever:

TGE 1.4 - complete and one heck of a nice engine
TGE 1.5 - still in development (or just finished)
TGX - still in development
TSE - still in development
TGB - complete
Constructor - still in development
Legions Game - (I think in development)

I fear the GG is over extending itself. GG has 30+ employees. Think about what they could do if they only had TGE/TSE. They could have two solid products instead of a whole bunch of unfinished products. I hope that GG will focus on TSE. I am here to stay and I support GG.

For $100 for C4 you can't go wrong.

I agree with Marcus. I pulled the trigger and bought C4 before the 1st but my target engine is still Torque. Hopefully, the pricing changes here will boost revenue and allow them to grow the company.

Yes. Make sure you evaluate the engines very carefully. Most of the features I loved in C4 could be easily integrated in TSE which is why I chose not to get it.

Buy TGE1.5 if your plans are to make an old-gen game as in your target market is casual market or in general users with low end PCs.
Make sure you can cope with a cumbersome (crap) art pipeline. But I assume you already have TGE 1.4 so you already know that or maybe already own Max.

Forget about Constructor, who knows when it gets released. GG gives no release date... so just forget about it until they do. They may release it tomorrow (Cool!) or toNever...
GG is master of Hype but you can't trust them in getting any single product finished in a timely manner because they work on too many engine spin-offs or game projects at the same time.

If you intend to make a NextGen game then TSE and C4 are both still in development.

As Marcus says, GG is over extending itself and has done so a lot in the past few years. GG is all about marketing and "News" after "News"... (e.g. Torque X... then the pool game). They get a news out and sell licenses of unfinished products to new people that comes at this site off a link from the latest news then get hooked by GG marketing pages and buy one or more GG engines not knowing that that engine you just bought may never be finished, no soon anyway.

Time in the game industry, when developing games or engines for games, is a very important factor.
As an indie you need a stable platform, one that is constatnly cared for/updated one that offers solid tools and a fine pipeline. GG had years to do that but they always go for adding a new project/engine instead rounding off what their users have been supporting for ages already.

Buy GG products for what they are today. Do not buy with the assumption that they will sort things out (tools, pipeline) soon.... you may be in for a long bumpyp ride when you really should be making a game and not simply become a fanboy going WOW everytime GG posts a new screen shot.

Just be realistic with what you are looking for and where you can get it from

Another thing to notice about GG. A lot of the stuff that gets done around here is by the community. The community is great, GG is ok. TGB and Constructor are both heavily associate driven programs, I think.

A bit of both on Constructor. Matthew Fairfax has done endless work on it along with a lot of associates. It's an effort from both parties.

So....let me get this straight.
You're willing to buy C4, and cope with the ineffeciency because they're still developing it. But you dislike GG, because they're still working on their stuff?
Color me confused but....

I am going to use my new Thread Locking capability on this thread before it gets out of hand.

@Hokuto: Your post is very wrong. You are entitled to your opinion, but it is wrong. I currently am working in the background with a portfolio of over 30 developers that are making professional, commercial grade products. The people behind these companies are professionals that have worked in the industry and realize what our technoliges acn do for them. Our engines can make games.

PLease note that the 30 companies are in no way the only comapnies using GG products on a commercial basis. These are just the companies/developers working with me on the Affiliated Developer program.

Actually, not a lot of development on the core engines comes from the community. The good developers that rise to the top of the community are under contract to work on the projects they are working on.
