Water blocks and square size

Does anyone know of a fix to allow water blocks to work correctly with terrain square sizes other than 8? The only answer I can find searching the forums is - "use a square size of 8", and that's not the answer I need.

I've tried modifying various parts of fluidsupport.cc to remove the hardcoded dependancy, and have rooted around in fluidrender and fluidquadtree, but I don't really understand what the problem is, so am not sure that I'm even looking in the right place.

There is a fix in TGE 1.5.

Did they fix the random culling bug, too? I e, when I get close to a water area, it may stop drawing, and then when I'm a ways into the water area, it'll start drawing again.
