Allright. Making Headway!

by Jeff Tunnell · in Technical Issues · 04/25/2002 (4:14 pm) · 16 replies

Still no progress on the nVidia driver issues, but I have been using Linux all afternoon to access the Internet (this is being written on my Linux box), do email, and do general business.

It's still a little slow, but most of the problem was with an improperly detected networking card. At least it is usable now. I'm still in Gnome because I want to use Evolution. BTW, Evolution kicks butt!

Now, I just need to get a few more things going.

How do you open a PC zip file in Linux? This is going to be a common problem.

Is there a Yahoo Messenger compatible client?

What is a good Shoutcast client? I use WinAmp on the PC to stream music all day long.

There may be some GUI tools to do this for you. However, you can easily open terminal to get to the command line and run 'unzip '. It is fairly painless process. There are plenty of arguments you pass to unzip to put it where you want it, etc. Just man unzip :-).

Yes! I use the official Yahoo! messenger client. You can grab it at http://messenger.yahoo.com/messenger/download/unix.html. However, you could also try the Java client which can be found at http://messenger.yahoo.com/.

MPG123!! If you go to the Download page at http://www.mpg123.de/ you will see a 'precompiled' directory. There you can grab the i386 RPM if you don't want to compile the source :-).

If you have any problems post!

I use gaim which supports Yahoo Messenger and icq and aim. Its not too bad.

XMMS is a decent gui audio player; not sure if it has shoutcast support though.

I salute your efforts to use linux on the desktop. Remember, when you get frustrated count to 10...or 20.

BTW, to get your streaming shoutcast, you just run:
mpg123 [shoutcast url]
. You could probabbly even setup a 'plug-in' to your web browser. A guy I used to work with created a little script that would spawn off mpg123 when you clicked on a shoutcast stream. It was pretty neat :-).

Jeff, it's nice to see you're having better success.

By the way, you don't need to be running Gnome to run Evolution. And yes, Evolution is a very nice piece of software.

for streaming XMMS (which should have come with Mandrake) should be fine. Use CTRL-L to load a new location. I believe XMMS uses mpg123 as a back-end.

Jeff, What exactly doesn't work? Compiling the drivers? getting X setup right? Maybe you can post your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file and the /var/log/XFree86.0.log. Also what do you get when run glxinfo?

Alternatively to Yahoo! Messenger, try using a Jabber client such as PSI. It's a KDE app (you don't need to be running KDE to run it, however) that requires you to register as a Jabber user www.jabber.org. However, it means you can then use AIM, Yahoo!, ICQ, MSN in the same client. A bit like Trillian for Windows.

If you don't like using command-line utilities, there are various applications such as file-roller that provide a GUI wrapper for those kind of programs.

Sorry for the lack of handy links, I'm writing this in a rush.

Jeff, what is your problem with nVidia drivers? I have them working perfectly. Be sure to download and compile the drivers from nVidia and not the ones that come with XFree.

Someone told me that xmms will work with Shoutcast, though I haven't tried it.

Did you get your NVidia driver problems sorted?

I think he gave up on linux.

but now with the new driver methods he should try again, as no doubt Redhat or other clones will have a kernel interface layer ready to go, and you wont have to configure a kernel to build it(the interface layer) for those distro's, thus enabling a much easier install.

It's quite easy, unpack the sources from nVidia, make install being root and that's it. It even loads the kernel modules.

If he was using SUSE 8.* then he'd have to install a particular version of the drivers... the standard ones are incompataible. The NVIDIA linux drivers page notes as much, though.

its not that easy anymore.
the kernel interface layer if not available has to be built.
which requires you have a configured make dep kernel in your source tree.

.. but for the clone distro's im sure there is a layer available.

Edit:
as well no it does not enable them in your XF86Config so you'll need to work in that file as well. (enable GLX while you are there)

My post was over a year old. When John Quigley came to Eugene for IndieGamesCon last November he got everything running on my new Redhat 8 machine.

I was loving that machine, but then Pat Wilson needed to use it as a workstation. He "messed" it up with Gentoo, a real man's Linux:) So, now my .nix comes in very small doses under Aqua and Quartz on a new Mac. I have installed X11, so I still have a toe in the water.

One day soon, I'm going to get another Linux machine. I really like it now that KDE, Mozilla, Evolution, and Open Office are getting so good. Bill Gates has to be hating life right now. It is hard to compete with free!

I suspect Mr. Gates still manages a smile every other 10 minutes or so...

OO is still the only sensible option if, like me, you regularly have to read up on Powerpoint lecture notes and presentations. KOffice's Powerpoint functionality does little for me, personally speaking.

But as for Evolution...well, that's a different story...
