Torque Shader Engine being pirated

by The Trusted One · in General Discussion · 07/19/2006 (9:01 pm) · 88 replies

Okay call me nuts people,

I just saw TSE on a bittorent pirate site, this honestly made me sick. I mean I am just as much of a pirate of the next guy, but I shelled out my $100 for TGE. I cant imagine how someone could pirate this, so many people worked so hard to make this what it is and they are by FAR not over charging.

Just wondering what everyone else thinks

@Pat

So, why the changes to the License to prevent companies stealing your engine? How about the complaints about other companies stealing GG sales thingy whatever about how you sell for $100 and the early adopter idea?

The only reason someone who puts their blood and sweat into software, doesn't think that pirating is a big deal, is because they do it. I'm not stupid enough to think it's because they really don't mind being stolen from. Nobody feels that way. I personally don't care if anyone steals TSE or TGE or TGB either. I do care if someone steals something I busted my ass to make. If I catch them, I'll press charges. Sure as hell. I don't work hard so other people can steal my work. Lazy asses could go get a job and pay for it. And meanwhile, I'm more than happy to share my effort freely for others to benifit from. But stealing, I'm not ok with.

Anyway - what's with all the whining lately in forums about how grown up conversations about game development don't belong on a website about game development? And especially on one that claims it's mission is to provide a higher quality of morals in an industry of companies that take advantage of their employees and the public. Is this website just for kids or something? Is this just about having a hobby? Is grown up talk too much to expect out of game makers? Are we all just kids who refuse to grow up and can't handle real conversations about the career and industry we work in? Everyone who makes indie games doesn't shut off being an adult. I kid around and talk trash as much or more than anyone else, so, I'm not some stick in the mud trying to cramp everyone's time. But if indies don't set out to make a better experience for games then who will?

@Badguy

Can't you see that I am a thinks I'm high and mighty better than everyone else finger pointer.

No, we can handle, we just don't give a shit anymore and want to get on with our lives instead of babbling on like childeren trying to convince their teacher to let the go out to recess 5 minutes early.

@Mincetro Deadalus Slayer

I think you are right.

Wow. This community is primarily about hobby game makers. And that's fine. I love hobbies. I just thought this community was about more. Or I would have joined a club with people I can talk to and hang with in person. The Seattle IGDA or something. I do live in video game city. Bummer. I guess I am too serious for this community now. I suppose when most people think what I think is not appropriate, then maybe it isn't. Well, that's sad. I'd hoped that I finally found some people who really wanted to change the way games are made and played. But that's just not what it's about... and I'm pretty blinded by my own hope that is is, to see the fact that it's not. It's a real serious bummer too. Everyone kept telling me that this is just a place to play around at making games and I didn't believe them. I really thought that it was possible to push the tide toward actually making games and people actually making a carreer of it instead of a hobby. But like everyone who talks to me says... 99% just want it for a hobby. And that's awesome. I'm just bummed. I thought we had enough people in this community to actually change the game industry. We certainly have the technology. Ah well. I'm sad. But, I guess it's better than being blinded by my hope. I guess that's why change for the better never happens... nobody is making decisions based on that. TSE really is meant for professional companies. I just didn't believe it when they told me that. Well. It was fun while it lasted. So long. I'm sure my wave making won't be missed. :P I knew this was coming. Right after I worked professionally and saw what people are like who are doing it for a job. I'm too serious for everyone here. Well, I made some friends and found a job. Can't ask for more than that.

Damn...Anton...you're a little pissed off since you got that job. What the hell are they feeding you? Steroids? Calm the hell down buddy. You're gonna have a stroke or something. Always remember that people are like sheep, except they're not as intelligent, and you can't expect as much from them.

(Edit)
I forgot to mention, I agree with every post in this thread. *smiles and nods*

Whats the web address? i want to (**tugs collar nervously), maybe, you know, give them bad emails so that they stop ;-D. I would never take a copy for myself (**cough). jk

ive noticed that certain areas of forums or recources and other thing like that on gg it will only let you in if you have either tge or tse, so they know. If someone with an unregistered copy tried to publish their game here or get a licence to publish the game to avoid getting sued, GG would know. So they get sued anyways :-)

With the current 'stated' amount of professional users as compared to the amount of 'hobbists', who exactly is complaining?? I don't get it. Somehow, Anton the Pirate, I don't think your idea of the business model and Mr. Tunnel's are in sync; I could be wrong.

It seems to me that if the true business model was to cater to 'professionals' only...why try to 'change the way games are made'? Don't the 'pros' know the steps already?

Seems to me that this 'changing' of the ways is meant as described; it is aimed DIRECTLY at the hobbist, the NON-professional.

If you cut off this segment of the market, you will see this site wither very quickly, and employees begin to get the pink slips.

Just remember who's helping to pay your monthly bills, 'professionals', with tge licenses/pack purchases...and whatnot. Go ahead, I think it is a good idea to disregard the hobbist. Let's see how things then really change!

I have fun, will always have fun, and determine to never stop having fun;never matter the 'heavies' who thinks there is something far more important going on here....it's an artsy product, sold to artsy people. I think it kinda ends there.

If you want to be serious about 'programming'; go work for the military, or government in that capacity or write some awesome code that will save some lives.

Okay,

I never intended this debate but for the record I draw the line simply at anything I use to make money I will not pirate

@Andrew

My posts aren't always overly aggressive and angry. Just lately.

I am going thru open eyes syndrome right now. That's where my eyes are opened and I realise that most people don't give a shit... and that it's ok, but not for me.

I came here thinking this was a place to make games. Then after a while I realised that it was a place to talk about making games but was filled with people who want to make games but are just struggling. Now I've realised that it's just a place to talk about making games.

I used to get so pissed when the few people who were doing anything were being dicks to the rest when the rest asked for help and I thought it meant that the few were just assholes. Now I realise that it's because they have long past realised that it's all bullshit and they get pissed when they people try to waste their time. They figure that those who really want to know will figure it out eventually. I was wrong. They were right.

My days of trying to make a difference are over. Don't worry. No more aggressive or angry posts from me. I am just going to post my plans and ask my questions and leave the argueing to someone else. I was just naive. Not any more.

I think maybe at one time maybe those who "knew what they were talking about" were jerks to those who had no clue. Maybe that spawned a new breed of users that weren't heard unless they were negative or contradicting. Reading emotions through text is always difficult because you can't hear the persons tones and if you feel you have to have your gaurd up everytime you post or read a forum then you will be more likely to attack others. I have seen a lot of sensitivity and that could be due to the lack of age, inexperience, maturity or the need to be heard.

I may be wrong but shouldn't forums contain a question and then helpful responses? Shouldn't blogs be the area for making statements and causing conversation that is debatable? Lastly, I think a lot of times we like to give our own opinion and when someone rebukes it we try to force them to agree with us. If they don't we get upset. That just leads to the other person trying to out burn the next.

To give my two cents regarding the actual threaded question....It makes me feel so much better to know that I am an indie license holder and that I will be making games. I can garuntee you that 9 times out of ten the person who stole the engine will not be benifiting him/her in the way of game making. If anything they will love it so much that they will realize they need to purchase TGE/TSE so they can dive further into its resources. GG is not worried I am sure. They played it smart.

Just to let everyone know. This post is not pointed to anyone directly. It is my opinion and not a threat or persuasion of any kind. I agree we need to cleanup these forums a little bit and actually bring back game making.

Thanks for listening.
