The GarageGames reviewing system.

Hello everyone,
I have a question to ask, first and foremost to the visitors of this site but also to GarageGames.
I was under the impression that if you buy a product, and review it - you should give your honest opinion on the product and try to stay objective and understanding. If you feel something is missing or terribly wrong, you're entitled to tell it in the review.
It's bad press for the product, to give a it 1 star rating. But if this is not allowed, then why do we have a rating system?
I was contacted by the author of a product I purchased (which details stay out of this discussion), and was literally flamed for my review. I feel a bit bad, but I also was very clear in my review and explained what was wrong, and what was great. This is my first negative product-review.
I guess my question is, *what* is the review system for and should I not worry about reviewing in the future?
