3DWorld or Lighting Kit?
by Dylan Jones · in Artist Corner · 11/22/2005 (4:55 am) · 9 replies
I am getting both the licenses for TGE and TSE for my upcoming title. Now that Leadwerks has released the 3D World Builder and looks very very promising my concern is this. I need lighting. I have the lighting kit demo, but I keep having strange problems, If i can make the lighting with the world builder I could get them perfect, but how would they act in Torque?
leadwerk, you tell me! :D
Which is better the lighting kit or 3D World Builder.
I want a honest opinion, then a bias one for both sides. Then the final truth. If some one could do all of them in one post that will end my worries!
Thanks!
*still thinks* Buy 3DWorld Builder or Lighting Kit? hmmhmmm

Two different things. 3DWorld Builder just exports Torque Light Entities with your Interiors. ie. Spot Light. The Lighting Pack enhances TGE's Lighting to a whole new level and eventually will for TSE so the developer intends.

Does anyone know 3Dworld Builders limitation as a demo?
Think I could do all the maps under the demo?
Damn...This is getting really really expansive.....100+150+50+120= 420+CDN = LOTS OF MONEY!
damn....damn my Canadianiness.
Do you think I could work out a deal with GG so i could get some kind of lesser price if I get TGE+TSE+Lighting Kit?

Really? So I have get two products...You would think a light is a light lol. Does anyone know 3Dworld Builders limitation as a demo?

As for a discount, i would say no. to get TSE you HAVE to have TGE. to get the lighting kit you have to have TGE as well. So I don't see them giving away discounts.

3d world builder is a .map modeling application. it can place lights in the interiors like any other .map editor. The lighting kit handles how the lights are displayed in a much better way then stock torque. As for a discount, i would say no. to get TSE you HAVE to have TGE. to get the lighting kit you have to have TGE as well. So I don't see them giving away discounts.

If I remember well, the 3D world demo has the save feature disabled, so you can do wathever you want but you can't save it (it's just a demo).
Regarding the GG products, just remember that TGE and TSE are different engines. TSE is an evolution of TGE, that adds a lot of feature (shaders, advanced terrain, etc) but is still Early Adopter.
This means that it's not a complete and bug free product, and that a lot of it's features will change in future.
The lighting kit works ONLY for TGE at the moment. I think that there is a TSE version in development, but I don't know if it will a free upgrade for current lk owners or, most likely, a completely new product.
If you are starting a project, maybe you should just get TGE and lighting kit (and 3DWS, or wait for constructor) and get TSE later.
Bye,
Jacopo
P.S. If you get TSE wile it's still in early adopter you will get a discount on it. Look in the prodcts page, if you are interested.

I think... you need to learn torque first, and after that, buy the lighning kit.

Thank you!! Now I can get the TGE+LK for 150 then get the World Builder for 120 then only have to spend 270! yee haw!
I couldnt really develop and release a project on the TSE anyways right now eh? cause the lighting and stuff stuff?

Yeah, Jacopo I think I should do what you said and only get the TGE and not the TSE aswell. I could get my project down using the TGE then if I get a fan base(or make money) +150 and up then I could buy the TSE and with the assets and code, and models and everything I could make a squel with better graphics, then hopefully more of a fan base!Thank you!! It's the exact same version, except that you can't save or export your maps.

1. Pick up TGE and 3DWS (you can use QuArK for free, but 3DWS is a very nice, streamlined product).
2. Get comfortable with creating and placing interiors and working with the standard lighting models.
3. Pick up TLK and work with more advanced lighting. This way you have a solid foundation and minimal "all-at-once" dollar output. Plus, you will have a common vocabulary when reading through John's documentation on using both lighting systems (standard and TLK) together for maximum efficiency and visual quality.
4. Pick up an EA license for TSE and begin working with the advances it poses.
TGE is a huge beast to learn. If you pick up everything you can and try to learn it all at once, you will most likely be overwhelmed. But if you have a solid learning plan, you should be able to chunk it up, learn it, and produce something.

I wouldn't live without the Lighting Kit for one day.
It lets you place lighting in realtime, in-game - it rocks.
