Bad reviews

Ive read some bad reviews about Torque on Devmaster.com and I was wondering:Is the engine dated?
Is it hard to use? Or, are these people simply incompetent?

@Jay Barnson: Ah, that sounds silly. I've seen it, but that was when you selected a .wav that didn't exist :) If you do that, you will get crossbow sounds as footsteps, and odd stuff like that. ;)

@Badguy: I find the DTS+ collisions + script doors a very good method. :)@Jay Barnson: Ah, that sounds silly. I've seen it, but that was when you selected a .wav that didn't exist :) If you do that, you will get crossbow sounds as footsteps, and odd stuff like that. ;)

Well I think im getting Torque today, just one question before I buy:
Other than the graphics are there any differences between TSE and TGE?

Wow I realy galvanized the GG community, Ive tried Crystal Space, its nighmere.Well I think im getting Torque today, just one question before I buy:

Cost: You have to already own TGE to get TSE. Effective cost of TSE: $250.
Stability: TGE's been around a while now, TSE is using a brand new graphics pipeline.
Terrain: TSE uses a terrain engine they're calling "Atlas". It allows all-but-unlimited terrain size. It's supposed to Really Rock.
Other stuff? Dunno... but other people do, and have posted on it in the past. You could google for it.

tge provides just about everything an indie developer could want from a game engine. nothing ive seen beats it in quality and price. there really should be a definitive downloadable sdk document. the only real problem i have with the engine is that rotation is rather buggy. if you rotate an object about -45 degrees or 305 degrees it wacks out and flips the object 180 degrees.
also, i think scripted dts as doors is a very feasible solution if you omit collision meshes and just use an invisible dif for collision while its closed.

Good 2 cents, might wanna check out Cipher its the same cost and its similarly powerful

Wow, Ok, I'm done laughing now, so I can finish my post.
Cipher is an overrated, under suported peice of barely functional bloatware. It is not even in..... No, wait, here comes the laughter again...

Cipher is weak, slow, and old. I know, I bought it much to my chagrin.

Torque is great though, even just modding the demo is way better than cipher.

Ya, well, I tend to be harsh on engines... even when they are only 100$.Torque is great though, even just modding the demo is way better than cipher.

Cipher's not bad at all. Limited to Windows, with a limited Linux port, yes, but not a bad engine by any but the most fragmented measure. Have you actually used it or are you simply looking at screenshots and utilizing old source? I haven't been back for a while, but their worklogs were pretty good. Since I'm mainly a Mac user with a Tablet PC, a DX-primarily engine didn't have as much as appeal as before. But I did like some of the culling algorithms and tool source.

Left over a year ago. Not my cup of tea :) I suppose it could have improved since then, but I doubt it.

The regular TGE IS dated but for the price of $100 it's a bargain. TSE looks very promising but then again, it's not out yet (no dynamic stencil lights yet for chrissake!)
TSE and TGE lack several key components that all modern engines should support:
Ragdolls (the fake ragodolld doesn't count, useful but not what we are after here, try throwing one of them down a flight of stairs)
AI (there is no real AI support here, indoor/outdoor pathfinding, decision making etc)
Physics (either finish integrating one of the popular free physics engines or roll your own and put it inside the engine)
Standard scripting language (go with Lua, JavaScript or whatever OR fix the current language to behave as the C language it tries to mimic)
TGE is a good, robust engine for doing networked multiplayer FPS or racing games. TSE may bring it on par rendering wise but IT IS NOT OUT YET and there seems to be no ai/physics upgrades planned.
All in all, probably the best hobbyist engines around for the price but putting it on par with the big (and very expensive) ones is misleading at best.
Donning my flame proof undies now and heading for the hills.

I think TGE is defended a little too vehemently, but this is hardly an unbiased forum ;)The regular TGE IS dated but for the price of $100 it's a bargain. TSE looks very promising but then again, it's not out yet (no dynamic stencil lights yet for chrissake!)

I haven't seen a single other game development tool in the same price range that's produced games as successful as the one's with Torque behind them.
Do you see any Blitz games on Xbox, PC, Mac, Linux, and other platforms? DarkBASIC games? Cipher games? Anything else other than custom engine games?
Simply put you don't see any other 3D games made by indie teams going as far as Torque games. That's what I use to measure an engine. I started out making PC games with DarkBASIC, then I switched over to Blitz3D which was a move up ... more published games were created with it and it was a more dynamic and stable tool. Aerial Antics used Blitz3D ... but now I'm using Torque because by comparison Blitz is limiting. Torque will only limit you if you haven't reached that level of the hierarchy. If you can't do what you want with Torque then back off to something easier until you get a handle on your skills or suck it up and break a sweat for once!

Torque's a great engine if you've got a good work ethic. That's what it comes down to. Everything in life is equivalent exchange. If you put in the 'wrench time' you'll be appropriately rewarded. I haven't seen a single other game development tool in the same price range that's produced games as successful as the one's with Torque behind them.

I've got countless hours of enjoyment digging through the source, learning how a real game engine works, and will continue getting that enjoyment for a long time to come.
If I have had a problem, I can almost always find an answer or at least a point in the right direction by searching the forums / resources. My impression of people that complain about the lack of documentation / complexity are that if they struggle to search some forums they have more important skills to work on than trying to make a game.

Same thing for game engines.

If you are going to make games, be aware you will not pelase everyone. If you want to please everyone and cant handle that some people will hate and/or detest what you have done.. dont make games.Same thing for game engines.

guess noone likes the preliminary doors huh?
:)
seem's simple enuff to get em in.
and only one or two things need to be finished before they could be called Completed Doors

Edit:
Oh yea..
And yuck to the dts + script doors. YuCk....
