Western Themed Games

Why don't we see many Western themed games?

I've been pondering this idea for a while now. I like RPGs and was thinking that there aren't really any that have a western theme to them. So then I started thinking that, that can be an edge to making one. Then again there are games out there, and they aren't too popular. Why aren't they popular?

It is different, when you look at all the popular MMOs and RPGs out today. I've heard people say they want some thing different than midevil/fantasy MMOs, but are we ready for that change?

I rented one of these games yesterday, and was bored of it after just a few hours. I know it wasn't the theme to the game, it was just how it played, but it got boring fast.

I don't know, I'm just rambling, but what do you think of Western themed games?

The western games i've played were all pretty good, still trying to get through "red dead revolver". The best westerns IMO have intersting stories, and pure story based games has become a bit of a niche market so that might be why there are so few out there.

There was a fun western themed rpg for PS1 called Wild Arms that I liked a lot. I think they're about to release the remake of it for PS2 actually. I think western themed games can be great when done correctly.

I wouldn't put Wild Arms in a western category. It's a Japanese style RPG that tries to incorporate subtle western influence. It's mostly fantasy though. The real stuff is Red Dead Revolver and Gun. Wild arms is just too Japanese at it's core for me to consider a western game. Also Wild Arms 3 (maybe even 4) has been out forever on the PS2 but they do have anotherone coming out soon.

It does seem like there should be alot more western themed FPS games out there given how popular and done to death FPS games are. I'm just glad the WWII fad is just about over. I was really starting to get tired of that. Then the Vietnam era rushed in and fizzled out just as quickly. I guess now it's Black Hawk Down and current war in Iraq games. I guess the western era of games got skipped. At least we have Dark Watch? Western...vampire...horror...I guess?

Remember Gun Smoke for NES? That was one of my favorites back in the day.

I'd love to make a western game.. I'm currently creating a webzine that draws on western influences in a modern Texas setting. I don't know why it appeal to me.. Ever see the old sci-fi movie west world? that was a way cool movie. And a cool video clip out at the moment by 'the killers'.. There's also this audio game which is western 'Grizzly Gulch Western Extravaganza': http://www.bavisoft.com/.

Didn't Strangers Wrath have a sort of sci-fi western theme as well? Maybe Western's are coming back?

Hehe, tried a commercial western FPS demo back in 2000, no one at E3 that we showed the demo to Bit, the dinosaur game and the Grimm game got quite a lot of attention, but no one liked westerns. It does look like publishers are opening up to the idea, and I think it would be great to have a really good western FPS out there. Something a bit more cerebral than a twitch shooter.

I admit that Westerns alone don't jump out at me a whole lot, but a Western RPG would grab my attention, as it is an interesting concept in my eyes.

I rented Red Dead Revolver over the weekend, and well, I got bored of it after one night. Everything just seemed to too repeatitive. I went to the mall and found another western game in the $10 area at a EB store. Never heard of it till then, and still can't remember the name. As far as Wild Arms. I have those. I like the look of the characters in drawings, but thats about it. Those just don't give the western feel. The only one I took the time to play is Wild Arms 3 and I got bored with it after a few weeks.

I've got an idea for a western/fantasy RPG, but have wandered why isn't there really a market for something like this. To get around this, I have tried to blend in the swords and magic into a western world. Kinda difficult, but it is looking very interesting. I just hope that this will bring the players who are so into the classic midevil games.

Lol, funny to see this post. As my first game level was western based. came out great, and still working on it.

GUN = good story, but short. finished it in 3 days. GREAT motion capture! (use the horse for cover)

Red Dead Revolver= decent, but it did get repetitive.

Oddworlds STRANGER = GREAT game!, cool inventions for weapons, great story, wonderful use of 3rd person/ first person views. ONE OF THE BEST Westerns i've played.

I would love to see a western MMORPG.

Actually came up with an idea for an alternate reality western style one that had the Moorish Empire expanding into the old west in competition with the united states just post revolutionary war.

Would love to do the environments for a western game. I am actually just finishing up the "South Western Desert" environment for the my RTS environment pack, below is a sneak peak, I'll post a pic of the day and some more shots this weekend.

We used the US Western Era Theme for our UT-436 mod and it worked very well. The project was to be ported over to the TGE since realistic terrain was lacking in UT technology; alas, coding was where it bogged down, and the 'official' project ended just recently with the surprising vanishing in a whisp of smoke when the domain expired[without my knowledge or any other team member's]!!!

Well, that portion of the project is over, but I'm left with a much better understanding of the engine, scripting, and art asset.

There are still two developers remaining in the team; myself[model builder/animator/exporter & voice actor], and a very talented Texture/3d/diff artist whose work I've published as illustrations in my TDN articles and my personal web pages where I outline a few 'tricks' I've discovered using Ms3d and gameSpace.

I had developed a nice 'deathcar' like gatling gun vehicle[3 wheeled! 1 invisible used to steer from the rear. We have a large assortment of revolver type pistols and rifles of all sorts too. Special weapons include TNT sticks/bundles, moonshine-molotov cocktails, and a leg hold trap/mine like item.

Gameplay was begun, but again, without active coding; a project goes absolutely nowhere, very slowly... I think we had two solid gametypes to develope that would be interesting to continue. A CTF/Command & Control type game[getting gold bullion to the Asseyor's office/town] and a DeathMatch type game[players become bounty-hunter types and get the 'Reward' for the Kill]. The DeathMatch type was to have HUD involvement for Scoring...it had promise, imho.

Without appearing too crass and totally hijacking this Thread in a self-serving manner, anyone interested in pursuing this line of gaming; please feel free to contact me at my Profile's public E-mail, and perhaps we can get this project brought back to life....;).

We two remaining developers are 'mature' developers[1 over and 1 near 40], and do not hold Pie-in-the-Sky aspirations of conquering the gaming world in 6 weeks!...we just want to complete an Old Western environment and return to our gaming where we felt comfortable.

Another high concept was to allow for a Persistent World where the players could start to develope their characters as heroes, desperados, etc....and keep them going, perhaps becoming as famous as some real Western denizens of the 1800's.

Thanks, sorry for digressing a long as I did...;).

There is an MMORPG in development called Priest which is western themed but with a horror twist. It's like western themed with zombies. Not sure if it's still in development as haven't really kept up on them.
