3ds Max Exporter Setup...Hierchy and LOD

I had a couple of questions regarding the setup of a model to export to the DTS format for Torque.
I'm using 3ds Max 4, and have a segmented model using a basic biped, with Bip01 as the root. I've seen in one of the tutorials ( max2dts.pdf )that the dummy used for assigning detail (detail145 let's say) is parented to Bip01. In that same document, it says the mesh pieces (the actual model or the pieces that make up the model) are to be attached to the scene root. Would I take this to mean that they should alo be attached to Bip01? I just want to make sure. It would be nice to have a diegram of the entire parent/child hierarchy to see if the order is what I'm thinking, with everything ultimately linked to Bip01.
The other question is in regards to using LOD with Multires. The dummies that are created to reference detail (detail80, detail60, etc) are all that is needed in the model file (along with the multires reference in the user preference for the mesh)? Even with the mesh name keeping the number value, it won't need another mesh to depict different states of detail?
Thanks a lot. Hope I'm not retreading old ground ;)
