I need a response from a GG employee verifying there is no scam.

by Robert Pierce · in Torque Game Engine · 12/26/2004 (4:22 pm) · 38 replies

First, I do not believe that GG will try to scam anybody but my parents are not as trusting.

I am highly paranoid and I rarely trust anyone (so it is odd I trust GG) but my parents just want to make sure I do not loose my hard earned money.

All I need is something saying there is no way my money will not be stolen (by GG) or a link to some sort of "Agreement" or the like that promises this is not a scam.

I am very sorry for the inconvenience but I have been waiting years (before I got a GG account) to get a hold of Torque and make a game.

Community Members, please do not yell at me for this, because I want to be a valued contributer to the Torque community.

Euhm... isn't thousands of happy customers enough proof this is not a scam?

I, for one, can vouch for GG. I've purchased Torque and several content packs from them, and I have had no trouble at all. Don't worry, they've been around for years and will continue to be here for many more years.

I would suggest saving your money and move out first.. Just a thought.

See End User License Agreement (EULA) for Torque.

If you purchase the source you will need a compiler. See FAQ Can I use free compilers with Torque? for more details on that.

As a side note, if someone is trying to scam you they aren't going to say "we are trying to scam you" You can tell Torque isn't a scam by the number of daily posts, the number of games on the product page, and the ability to find references on other game making sites such as the 3D Game Studio's FAQ showing how its engine stacks up compared to Torque and other game engines.

Hope that helps.

Bought TGE, TSE, and the SLP all without a problem. Tell your parents to get out of the house more and quit letting sensationalizing reporters tell them how to live.

EDIT: And just in case they try to lecture you about my comments, you can tell them I have 3 kids, one is a teen, and I have ALREADY done more web based purchasing without a problem than they will do for the rest of their lives, lol.

Yeah I got the same treatment from my parents when I told them about it. 'Too Good To Be True'. I was cautious, and this was before any games had been released or anything. Lucky im trusting and went ahead with it. I havent looked back since.

Thanks for your interest Robert, please see this page for more details on our shopping security.

Thanks everyone for responding so fast, this should be enough to convince them.

@Ward:
Yeah, I tried that, they want something from an employee, but this should help, :)

@David:
Well, I am a bit too young to move out without a bit of trouble.

@Dan:
I know people are not going to outright say it is a scam, but this is basically the best way to prove that GG is good.

@Gonzo:
My parents do use web-based shopping (if you consider e-bay shopping).

Personally, I do not trust e-bay. I do not have an e-bay account open yet I get scam mail to "verify my account details" that links to an IP that is in no way affiliated with e-bay/PayPal (sorry for the little rant like speech).

Also, when I wasn't home for a while, my parents fell for one of those scams and lost their account for a bit (it was a hassle trying to fix everything). This is why they are a bit apprehensive about online shopping and non-M$ like corporations.

@Dylan:
Well, usually things that are 'Too good to be true' are scams, like "Win a free XBOX, just click here and give us your private details!".

@Josh:
Thanks, you are possibly the deciding factor on whether I get Torque or I don't.

And finally, thanks to all of you for prooving GG is good and not a scammer.

Oh, and long live Linux (IMO, one of the best reasons to use Torque)!

@Robert - You're not the only person who has asked "What is the catch?" (We get it a few times a day - usually on the phone). The price of our closest competitor at this level of tech is about 1,000 times more and has strings attached.

@Jay:
I really like the Unreal Engine.
The only problems I have with the Unreal Engine are:
-- Price!
-- Low OpenGL support.
-- Doesn't support Linux out of the box. You have to support Linux!

When I was first interested in game development, I learned Liberty BASIC (could only make basic sprite games at that time, but it was still good!).

The first engine I found was CrystalSpace, which I didn't understand at that time, because I only knew BASIC and HTML (I don't consider HTML a programming language though). About a month after that I discovered Torque.

About 2 years later, I have the money to buy Torque!

I look forward to being able to buy Torque so I start "hacking" into and reading the documentation.

(Sorry about that Unreal Engine stuff, I like Torque more!)

Robert: I write regularly for Game Developer Magazine and reviewed the Torque Game Engine in September/October of this year. You might want to try and pick up a back issue and read through the review (that reminds me, I have to send Jay Moore the longer review now that the 90 days exclusive publishing agreement is about to elapse). I've met Jeff Tunnel (just after his dirt bike tumble) and several of the other GG employees at GDC and Jay Moore spent at least 45 minutes bending my ear on the phone when I was preparing for the review. These guys really are on the level and doing an amazing job. I've purchased several products from them (I actually bought TGE then reviewed it, even though I could have requested a free copy (Jeff Tunnel, you owe me ;-D )), I've also been asked to teach TGE to university students in California.

The biggest hurdle you will face once you acquire TGE will be getting productive due to the sheer quantity of features in the engine. I would suggest you spend a little extra money and pick up some of the BraveTree art packs in addition to TGE as you will have a lot more fun things to play with than the standard Orc running around a terrain. :-)

You can find 11 independent reviews of TGE in this DevMaster.Net db entry, and another on this PC Plus (a UK magazine) page.

If you search at Yahoo or Google using the term "Torque Game Engine", you can also find out about Torque on many thousands of independent sites including Planet Tribes.

However, if you search using '+"Torque Game Engine" +scam' at Yahoo, you get only 21 matches, and on all of those the word "scam" is associated with another product or service that happens to be on the same page.

You can also add me to the list of satisfied TGE and TSE license owners (I've also bought a couple of addon packs via this site). :)

Finally, games made with Torque have a (small) spotlight in January's Computer Gaming World (local post commenting about it) (print magazine, can buy at bookstores/newspaper stands), as well as a couple of Torque based games won awards at this year's Independent Games Festival and/or been selected for 2005 finalists (see links in the two appropriate News Releases: Game Tunnel 2004 Game of the Year Awards, and 2005 Independent Games Festival finalists announcement.

Alright guys, this should be enough.

Soon my profile will say "TGE Owner" (I hope).

Torque is on the up and up...

just reference Tribes and Tribes2 at the store to your parents as an example of what has been released with it ;)

I loved Tribes 2.

@Robert: Have you seen the 3D Game Programming All In One book yet? For a third of the cost of the indie license you get the Torque engine in binary form. You can build all kinds of games with TorqueScript alone and without recompiling the engine. If you build something that you think is marketable you can then purchase the indie license (so you can sell your game). Also it is hard to get scammed at a bookstore.

They don't trust GarageGames but they do trust random anonymous people selling used stuff on ebay? Man the world just gets wackier and wackier!

@David:
I plan on getting the book too, :)

@Jarrod:
I never trusted e-Bay. They are still waiting for someone to send them the money for something they sold (3 months I think it has been!)

@Gonzo:
Well, they are classic "Americans" (no offense) and believe what they see on TV.
I hate TV, and anything funded by Microsoft (which in my opinion is the most fascist organization since the 40s).
