I've...Been having Trouble Spelling Lately :'(

by Jerane Alleyne · in General Discussion · 10/12/2001 (2:46 pm) · 10 replies

I'm hoping this is just a tempoary thing while working on this game....

Lately, I have had too many spelling errors when I make posts, write emails, or adding to my game documents. At first, I thought I was just tired after staying up all night...but this is now happening way too often. You would think that with all the typing, I would be better at catching my spelling errors, but instead they are increasing!!

I'm getting scared, because I'm in the middle of writing my business plan (and editing about 4 other documents off and on), and I knoew spelling and grammar check only do so much. I actually think that's part of the problem. Instead of me catching my errors normally, I just go on typing without paying much attention.

Has anyone else had any loss of wits during game development? I don't drink caffine, and usually sleep about 4hrs a night (I've been going back to my 8hr schedule tho), so I know that doesn't help. I was just curious if I should expect any other deblitating brain functions!!

Thanks for hearing me go on!!

Oh, and I must have made over 10 mistakes on this pot alone...This is the beginning of my mental collapse...

I's cain't spel nun two wel meself and also have a horrible memory for everyday things (I've lost my glasses while wearing them and misplaced my keys in my pocket). However, in my case, those conditions are genetic :p

Luckily creativity and a fantastic gift for mathematics are also genetic in my family. So it balances things out a bit :)

One thing I have noticed: Headaches, almost migraine level at times. It's odd though, they only hit when I'm taking a break from my game-related work. As soon as I get back to working on my docs or hashing over a piece of code they go away. I had a similiar problem when I was painting and sketching a few years ago. As long as I was working on my art I was fine, as soon as I stopped the pain started. It's like my work has become an addiction, complete with painful withdrawl symptoms.

This is a very strange thread.

You guys cracked me up! You should blame it on the keyboard!
Just remember..."spelling" leads to errors in coding!
Get some sleep, play with your dog, take a hike, or READ a book. All of these will refresh not only your creative side, but shake the webs out of your brain, so you can control your fingers again, and find the right keys!

Good luck.

I'm not sure this thread is that strange really, it's a rather serious subject after all. I can certainly identify with the "withdrawal" symptoms when I don't get to work as much as I want to and I've had long-term memory problems for as long as I can remember (pun intended =). My short-term memory, logical- and visual- thinking works perfect though.

As for the spelling; use a spell checker, works great. msword does a fairly nice job catching both spelling and grammatical errors.

My belief is that you've lost your wits to even start game development...

Just don't let spelling errors creep into variable/function names. There's little worse than having to program using (for example) an engine with naming errors. *shudder*

Edit: I don't believe it. I misspelt "[/i]" and screwed up the formatting.

I don't program, so I don't have to worry about that, but I AM a writer...so mistakes look bad, even if they don't screw anything up like they do in coding.

I'd say to force yourself to go back when you make a mistake, and correct it, rather than just typing on. Eventually, you'll do it naturally.

My biggest problem is hitting the spacebar too soon, so I wind up with something lik ethis. Fortunately, I can somehow tell when I make a mistake (I look at the keyboard when I type) without looking back up. Usually.

And like the goo dman said, do something else for awhile. Especially reading. Reading can't really do you harm.

stop doing drugs ;)

i dont drink alcahal either and altho my spelling on forums and chat isnt the greatest (i could care less about them) and really "snicker" at those that think general forum ant chat typing should be perfrct(cuz they are the lame ones) and altho douments are important if you get your point accross, thats what counts, code of course is a different matter altoget her

Trust me, nothing would get done if we'd all "stop doing drugs". I know for sure I wouldn't get to far if I didn't get my normal dose of espresso each day. =)

Luckily, I don't misspell things when coding. I think my spelling problems are a matter of mental focus. When I write or type I'm usually three or four sentences ahead mentally, in other words, focused on what I'm going to say next rather than being focused on what I'm saying right at that moment. When I'm coding however, I'm totally focused on the line of code I'm typing right at that moment and nothing else.

I feel your spelling pain. There is nothing worse than a spelling error in a design doc because it distracts the reader from the point you are trying to make. Your best bet is to get someone who you know is fairly good at spelling and grammer to read over what you've written and to go over it yourself a couple of times. I wouldn't get too concerned with spelling errors on a first draft of something. When your riding a creative flare worrying about spelling will just slow down the creative process.

If your only getting four hours of sleep a night I would be more concerned about the gammer then the spelling. Clarity of thought is not exactly at its strongest when your tired. Once again, proof reading is your best bet to get rid of these errors. I'm sure you could find some qualified people to proof read from the GG community. Just be ready for criticism.
