V12 Engine = Tribes2?

by Jerane Alleyne · in General Discussion · 02/26/2001 (7:20 pm) · 10 replies

I've only just recently noticed this...but I looked at the screenshots of Tribes2, and noticed one of the same shots as the one that shows what the V12 Engine will looks like....

I guess this is a silly question, but is the V12 the same engine use for T2? Guess ti would be cool if it is so, and we would have somewhat of an insight as to its capabilities.

Thanks!

I was thinking the same thing. Is it a better version based on the Tribes 2 engine or something totally different?

I found the pic on Dynamix's Tribes 2 page.

Exact match.

So GarageGames, when are you gonna tell us formally?

Been known for awhile, actually. Most of the Tribes community that'd been tipped off on GarageGames.com (when Rick and Tim left Dynamix to follow Jeff), put two and two together.

I'm not so sure that it is so black and white. We don't know who owns what? Seeing how Garagegames is still working on the engine, leads me to believe that it is technology based on the T2 engine. We are just going to have to wait for an announcement I think.

Well, I dunno, seems pretty cut and dry to me. Dynamix is currently leasing the engine from Garage Games.

ok.. it's true. :) Much more to follow.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. When you said 'It's true', did you mean that Dynamix is actually leasing Tribes 2 engine technology from GarageGames? If so, that is a MAJOR development . . none of us in the Tribes community realized that, to say the least.

My prior understanding was that GarageGames had a certain amount of 'goodwill' with Dynamix (not to mention a certain amount of legal ground re: intellectual property) that led to them acquiring the rights to modify and redistribute the Tribes 2 engine technology. Hell, most observant Tribes players knew that way back when.

But is it the other way around? I wondered what would happen when some of the best talent left Dynamix, and if GarageGames started modifying the source code sometime this summer or fall then it is conceivable that the unstable, buggy 'beta' code was the work of Dynamix, and the stbilized 'meta' code was the work of GG . . .

I'm doubting this heavily of course . . . but the two dev teams would be working pretty closely, and GG has a vested interest in Tribes 2 coming out as quickly as possible . .

GarageGames is licensing the code from Dynamix. Dynamix is finishing the engine along with Tribes 2, and we've obtained the rights to it. The FAQ goes over it a little more. The story of who did what is sort of long.

*whew* So I did know what was going on.

Although, thinking about it . . . I suppose you couldn't say how much you were involved precisely, or wouldn't out of prudence, but given that not just delays but in fact any flaws of the Tribes 2 engine would impact you financially, I would not be surprised to hear that GarageGames contributed a substantial amount of effort to the current, (from all accounts) stellar build of Tribes 2.
