Halo influenced game dubbed INSANE
by Scooby Brown · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 06/22/2004 (8:39 am) · 80 replies
After playing the amazing halo for 3 months strait i have come up with a game idea for a halo clone. its called insane and the name alone gives the gameplay ideas away.
Story: earth has colonized many planets due to the technological advances humans have made. the three planets humans have colonized are chukal, pea, and aresma. while attempting to colonize a fourth planet they found a race of power hungry "jarra". the humans and jarra have been at war for years. you, an elite star soldier and your team have been sent to aresma to take out the jarra high counsel leader drenar.
Gameplay: similar to halo. there will be 6 guns at your disposal. i havent come up with names yet but i will post them soon.
AI: ai will be very intelligent. your soldiers will at times have mood fits and shoot dead jarra courpse, spring into battle, ect. jarra ai will include running away from grenades, using natural enviornments as cover, grouping up if battle conditions get bad, retreating from battle if conditions get too bad.
i would also like to port this to the xbox.
more features to come
in need of a dev team, help is very welcome

your logic is flawed.
you seem to think people are not Sheep..
Sheeple if you will.
but see .. people Are sheep.
your friends got it Because you did.
not cause it was great.
the game is shit.. simply put.
Many other games with weaker marketing were much better.
I've played Plenty to know and say that the game is shit and pale in comparison.
as for the millions of suckers buying into the hype?
cmon give your head a shake.
it dont take much to get the sheeple out there buying your stuff.
and on this note.
we can drudge up Much of the microsoft stuff.
and say the same thing.
sure millions bought it..
but did they really have a clue?
prolly not.
too busy buying in.

The best selling game of all time was "The Sims". I'm not sure where you got that info but be careful. The Sims has sold over 20 million UNITS and it's still going up. I think the total sold for Halo is somewhere between 4-5 Million Units sold between Xbox & PC sales.
I'm really not one of those guys who like pointing out mistakes really! I just remember the astounding number of Sims units sold.

@Gonzo: This is completely off topic, but you mentioned this: Quote:...as the title, "Greatest game of all time" or "Best selling game of all time"?

im not really making a clone but what i mean as using halo as a base is the gameplay elements that halo has that i find enjoying and challenging. the ai i found good in legendary mode due to the fact that the elites duck for cover when their health is low and they see me. another good thing is that each alien has its own character traits. elites wait for you to throw the first punch. i found that impressive.
but i mainly i use halo for its gameplay and the art work. i also like the 2 player campaign mode. me and my cousin have fun using covert op style combat tactics to take out the enemy. the fact that you dont have to save your ingame progress i also like. saving just steers away from the gameplay and on legendary you need every checkpoint you can get.
quote:
I do think it would be neat to see a game unlike Unreal II or Far Cry that is inspired by Halo and actually does a number of FPS things right.
i like that idea
and for the load times i plan to divide each and every thing in the level into a separate file, so the jittering part wouldnt be noticed(i.e. you are walking throungh a tunnel, you come to the end, you see a turn in front of you and a wall. all that will be loaded is the wall and the ground, and as you progress little non-detailed pieces of the land that you see will be loaded

I didn't find the AI that great myself (though better than most console "I see you through walls and will run in place until I see you...then I'll shoot" AI). The Elites seemed to move about the same regardless of what difficulty I was playing on. The difference seemed to be that they'd hide to recover their shield more often on Legendary, which made getting through areas with multiples of them rather difficult. As for the characterization of the enemies, I didn't see that as much different than a number of console platformer titles. But, thinking about usual FPS enemies, they did have quite a bit of personality.
One of the main ways that Jak II solved the problem of jittering was exactly what you're talking about: creating tightly designed levels that allow for precaching and loading. Moving between different parts of the city made this pretty evident if you were looking at it technologically. Each new area had a small, tight "loading" zone that expanded into a much larger and more detailed area.

I'm guessing that part of the popularity and attention Halo has gotten was due to its history or time in development and media scrutiny on a level probably shared with the likes of Daikatana. The game itself is something else IMO. If there was anything that it did exceptionally well, it was in excecution and artistic style (not the bell and whistle fx, but artistic direction, which I respond to first). I can't say how many buggies and dropship designs have more than a passing resemblence to those in Halo. In other areas however, its at least as well done as some of the best shooters, if not surpassed by. AI, level design, weapons, story...its all done well, but there are and have been much better. The only other thing I can think of is that its console status helped propel it, doing more for console-based FPS than anything else before it(?).

When exactly did Halo become the first person shooter success by which all others are judged (not speaking financially of course)? Gamepsy even admited that it was one of the top ten most overrated games. I thought it was quite a good game, but that status it has received I do find interesting to say the least.I'm guessing that part of the popularity and attention Halo has gotten was due to its history or time in development and media scrutiny on a level probably shared with the likes of Daikatana. Don't try to make anything Stargate or similar. MGMs lawyers will be on your ass half way through development. Thats what happened to my Stargate game(it was gonna be free), but now I have an original game called Illumina(illumina-game.com). Alot of people say that it looks like a Halo clone, but its not even close.

I should have said that the aspects of Halo aren't much different than other shooters, yet there are games out there trying to be 'Halo-killers' or 'slated to compete with Halo', or as you say 'Halo clone'. Besides art style, what is there to emulate that's unique to Halo? I wouldn't be surpised that, if you finish your game, that it might not see a comparison to Halo, not because of game quality, but you might see that there isn't a lot that separates Halo from other games of its type where it counts :)

If you were referring to my post, it was on topic..probably should have just worded it better :PI should have said that the aspects of Halo aren't much different than other shooters, yet there are games out there trying to be 'Halo-killers' or 'slated to compete with Halo', or as you say 'Halo clone'. "Best selling game of all time" is an EXAMPLE!!!! EXAMPLE!!!!
It's an EXAMPLE, It's not my FACT, it's not my claim for Halo, it's not my claim for any game. It's an EXAMPLE of a title that a game can earn, and it is USUALLY NOT ASSOCIATED WITH GAMES THAT SUCK. But of course all you experts here I'm sure can find plenty of self proclaimed evidence to support the fact that all games do indeed suck, none of them have ever been up to the quality that the experts here achieve on a daily basis and they always will suck no matter how many millions get put into them.
That's fine, I'll agree with all of you that every game ever released sucked big time ass. Just some of them sucked less ass than others. That's why they sold more.
@ badguy - I hesitate to address you at all because most of the posts I've seen from you border on drug induced idiocy. This for example...
No idiot, they bought it because unlike you they can afford their own games, and they wanted their own copy of Halo, not my copy. That doesn't make them sheep, it makes them consumers, you my friend are nothing more than a consumer basher who decides when and where someone is a sheep completely on your useless standards. BTW, you don't know my friends and I'm pretty sure all of them are well beyond your league of intelligence, so please, do us all a favor and stick to what you know, which is nothing.
If it's that easy then I say YOU are shit, simply put.
Obviously finding unbiased intelligent and informed people to talk to here is about as easy as finding a copy of Torque with no bugs in it. Aint gonna happen. Everyone here is an expert and none of them have a clue.
I'm done with this thread, nothing else worth any value is going to come out of it, I can tell by the participants who already know everything and shouldn't even be wasting their breath on all these facts that they have so well established even decades ago. They teach "Halo sucks" in schools now I guess.

Ok, to all the grade school kids here that can only operate on the exact words without seeing between the lines..."Best selling game of all time" is an EXAMPLE!!!! EXAMPLE!!!!

I have little enough time to work on my project as it is, so I really don't have time to devote to another one. Good luck, though.
@gonzo
I never said Halo sucked. I actually said quite the opposite: I enjoyed it. But I gave an honest evaluation of its problems. You were the one who started throwing around "best selling game of all time". I would expect that if you were using examples, you would back them up with facts rather than random conjecture.

People aren't sheep. That's why they are called people and sheep are called sheep. You lump EVERYONE into your(notice how I used "your" correctly) view of the world. Those of us outside your box see the limited scope of your view and laugh at it. While SOME consumers may be motivated completely by hype, fad, or jealousy, it does not mean they are sheep, or lack intelligence in any way. In fact badguy, you are actually sheeping your own POV onto the rest of us. You're one of those "Goth" type attitudes that see's yourself as the only one on the planet with a clue and you can't help but wonder why the rest of the world is so stupid. It shows bigtime. Do yourself a favor, go get "Dianetics" by L. Ron Hubbard, here's some cheap copies....

And lack of good syntax, grammer, and spelling, are what a I hate about kids today. What have you got against Americans? And to clarify one more time, you don't know my friends, you don't know me, and you really don't know jack shit about anything except proving exactly how limited and childish your mind really is.
Practice what you preach moron.
Oh yes I can. I can see it quite clearly. You see kid, those of us that have the knowledge can see right through those of you that don't. And as you will notice, I think moron is more fitting. Idiot was a little harsh. Look them up, you'll understand.

very touching indeed.
you note my lack of grammer in the web forums.
and relay that to my intelligence.
that is fine. I rarely use punctuation in web forums.
and if I use it incorrectly im ok with that as well.
I am not an english major. nor do i pretend to be.
I am a software developer not an english professor.
and c++ dont use punctuation nor does it care how i use the words.
What I hate about americans?
that cannot be listed here.. tho cnn and other's have a good portion of it.
my views of the world are Not flawed.
I see clearly. my Eyes Are open.
I do see the ramifications of cause and effect.
you on the other hand apparently do not.
I thought you were done with this thread clown?
this one is great:
this is what drove the native's to damn near extinction.
you will teach your kids it dont matter how much they consume as long as they feel ok.
not taking into account the other people required to make that happen. it is a truly sick mentality.
you reference me as a kid, a child.
that is cool, and again shows how little you know.
the Funniest part is..
you took my original post here and decided to flame me with your better than attitude and thoughts.
meanwhile you are out of fuel .. you have no ammunition.
you can try to twist what I say till it fits. that's fine.
I know who you are.
I've meet many like you.
you are truly a complete nitwit. you prolly make less than 40k a year.
you prolly have an unsuccessfull business on the side.
you prolly beat your wife And you kids when you have a bad day.
and all because your a sheep and that is what your dad did to you.
and with good reason he did..
cause your a complete waste of skin.

I don't think you should use Halo as a base. An influence, yes, but don't do a clone. Clones are usually horrible renditions of the original that just makes you think "why aren't I playing the original? ... Oh, I think I will."
Making an original title will be much more satisfying. Now, if you were doing an art demo and wanted to show off your Maya or Lightwave or 3DS skills, then I could see recreating a favorite level for demonstration purposes.
Creating Halo again, and adding something just doesn't seem that exciting to me.
Of course, in ten years, the idea of recreating Halo in the Unreal 2014 engine might be pretty cool. But right now, I don't really see the point.
I do think it would be neat to see a game unlike Unreal II or Far Cry that is inspired by Halo and actually does a number of FPS things right.
