Halo influenced game dubbed INSANE
by Scooby Brown · in Game Design and Creative Issues · 06/22/2004 (8:39 am) · 80 replies
After playing the amazing halo for 3 months strait i have come up with a game idea for a halo clone. its called insane and the name alone gives the gameplay ideas away.
Story: earth has colonized many planets due to the technological advances humans have made. the three planets humans have colonized are chukal, pea, and aresma. while attempting to colonize a fourth planet they found a race of power hungry "jarra". the humans and jarra have been at war for years. you, an elite star soldier and your team have been sent to aresma to take out the jarra high counsel leader drenar.
Gameplay: similar to halo. there will be 6 guns at your disposal. i havent come up with names yet but i will post them soon.
AI: ai will be very intelligent. your soldiers will at times have mood fits and shoot dead jarra courpse, spring into battle, ect. jarra ai will include running away from grenades, using natural enviornments as cover, grouping up if battle conditions get bad, retreating from battle if conditions get too bad.
i would also like to port this to the xbox.
more features to come
in need of a dev team, help is very welcome

First, how would you go about making load times non-existant.
Two, this really sounds like a duplicate of Halo. Halo was already made.... why make it again?
Perhaps you should detail what you plan on doing or think of a new idea.
Just a thought.

Hugh, a couple of things.First, how would you go about making load times non-existant.

Halo was just an extremely large copy of many movies and video games largely the movie Aliens(which happens to be my most fav), it also took things from the books and film Starship Troopers...
...Its not a new idea

All of them are great games, though.
Not sure how the original poster plans to create a Halo-sized FPS with "no load times". Good luck with that. Keep in mind that if you're going after the "Halo" market, the benchmark you'll have to beat is Halo 2 (if not Halo 3 or 4), since Halo 2 will be out long before your game will.

The same is true of Half Life or StarCraft for that matter. All of them are great games, though.

No load times... Ok... How would you port this to the X-box though? You'd have to get Microsoft to approve your design and then get the XDK off of them, something I feel quite certain they wouldn't do for a clone of one of their top selling games of all time.
By no means am I trying to discourage you from making your game. But I honestly do not think you would be able to make any money off of it, let alone an X-box port since well Halo is out along with Halo 2 on its way and a rumored Halo 3 in design stage. But you could make it and put it out for a free download or something.

I agree that yes the story was cliche, very much cliched. Yes the AI isn't top notch, but I believe what really pushed Halo over the top was the fact that it was the first real FPS for the X-box and everyone flocked to it. It did have a fun multiplayer mode. That's about all I play on it.No load times... Ok... How would you port this to the X-box though? Oh yeah, it sucked so bad it had to sell over 3 million copies just to get over how bad it sucked. In fact, it sucked so bad that Halo2 is the most anticipated sucky sequal in gaming history. Me thinks the AI had you outsmarted which is why you were so angry with it. The first time you hear "Get it off me!! Get it off me!! BOOM!!!" you know you are playing a classic. LOLOLOLOL
Ok, you name the game that is original, and I'll tell you where they ripped it off from. Everything is a ripoff.
@ Scooby - how are you going to kill load times?

Do you plan on using Torque? I'm not a programmer, but I've heard that torque is not a console friendly engine (correct me If I'm wrong).
@Gonzo: I don't think something has to be good for it to be popular. Just take a look at the movie industry.

@ Scooby: Having no load times is an... interesting goal. However, I interpretted Stefan's questions as being gameplay oriented. How do you plan on making that different?Do you plan on using Torque? TSE could be a possible contender for a console port (graphically wise), X-box would be the best option because X-box controls are built mainly from DirectInput from what I've read on tech specs, but still before any port could be done you'd have to have the XDK (X-box Development Kit) in order to be able to port it. Then worry about the changes to the Torque engine or TSE, whichever you used. Good luck though.

The selling point of Halo the whole time was the graphics (since before the xbox was even being planned)

I suggest that you might also want to look into purchasing a book on game design to get a better idea of what is required before you go forward with your idea as it will save you a lot of heart ache and time in the long run.
Edit:
@Gonzo, the question you have to ask is Halo 2 so highly anticipated because it will be a great game or because the marketing is so great on it that we are lead to believe it will be great? Doom 3 and Half Life 2 are two such games with similar marketing practices that lead us to believe that they will also be the greatest thing since sliced bread... but where would they be without marketing pimping them from hell to high water?

@Hugh, your game premise sounds more like a mix of Stargate, Doom and Half Life and in all honesty doesn't sound like it's capable of making a game out of. A 'MOD' yes, but not a game without some serious redesign.I suggest that you might also want to look into purchasing a book on game design to get a better idea of what is required before you go forward with your idea as it will save you a lot of heart ache and time in the long run.

I get enough of the fanboy crap as a mod at GameFAQs. Please don't extend it here.
I greatly enjoyed Halo, but it wasn't anywhere near "teh bets gaem eVAR!!!11 LOLOLOLOLKOL~!!" It did enough things right to be a great FPS experience, but it also did a lot of things wrong. The exterior levels were extremely nice and detailed, but the interior missions were more repetative than the randomly generated dungeons in Daggerfall. The developers even commented that the first thing they would change if they could go back would be the extremely horrible mind-numbing experience of playing through The Library. It is literally one of the worst FPS levels that I've played in the last five years...and you have to remember that I make it a point to play complete and utter crap games to learn what NOT to do (ValuSoft have been pumping out some extremely bland FPS's, as have other budget-level distributors...and that's nothing compared to the mod scene for Unreal and Half-Life).
That AI was horrible for a PC FPS, and EXCELLENT for a console FPS. But there didn't seem to be much difference between the AI on the easiest difficulty setting to the AI on Legendary except that the Grunts lobbed more grenades and the enemies did more damage.
I'm anticipating Halo 2, but Jesus, I can't believe the complete fanboydom that I see regarding it (or any title, really). I'm sure it will be fun and have flaws. Just like every game.

Here's a hint, it's not because they suck. If they do suck, then you must admit that EVERY other game out there sucked much worse than Halo did, or they would have sold more and they would be "Best selling game of all time"
End of story. Argue with the facts, and you lose. But feel free to try and be right.
Just because someone enjoyed Halo and felt far less ripped off of their money than they had on hundreds of other titles doesn't make them some ghey "fanboy" of the game. The fact is your statement shows that you are nothing short of jealous of the success you obviously haven't had. If you can crank out a better game and show us all how it's supposed to be done, I'll be the first to thank you and buy it when you are done. See you in a few decades.

Any of you can say all you want about Halo, but the fact is all of you are sitting here trashing it while MSFT reaps the 150 million+ in sales from it. I liked it. I told my buddies about it, they even got to play mine BEFORE they bought it, and they still bought it. Millions of people bought it. Using the logic you guys use all one needs to do is pop out a shitty game and then spend a few mil hyping it and it's a done deal, sold to everyone. That's flat out NOT the case. "A psychological thriller. A former soldier, plagued with post-traumatic stress disorder, must prevent himself from being institutionalized while secretly fearing that a rash of murders might actually have been performed by him during one of his 'episodes', where he dreamed he was battling alien invaders."
That actually COULD make for a cool game.

the xbox porting for me is easy since i have a copy of the openXDK and a xbox engine on the side. the demos compiled and worked perfectly.
i havent played half-life so please post what part of my story is like half-life.

insanes levels will have to have complex turns to give the pc and console time to load.
i have put alot of thought into this feature and have a concrete plan of how i am going to empliment it.
06/23/2004 (8:42 am)
The no load times goal has been completed before, just not in the FPS genre. look at jak and daxter and jak 2. my FPS thought is that when you start a new game you will see a load time but it will be loading only part of the level, where you start. as you progress through the level the part you are going to loads and renders and the part you left behind will be cleaned out of memory , so that it does not slow frame rates. ZOE2 had no load times partly because at the end of every level you saw a movie. For insane i plan to make each level seamlessly link. jak and daxter, jak 2, and zoe2 only did this because the ps2 has 32 mb of memory.insanes levels will have to have complex turns to give the pc and console time to load.

No, your irrational logic, blindness towards Halo's obvious flaws that the developers themselves have commented on, and use of multiple LOL's were the rationale behind the fanboy comment.
If you had actually read my post rather than simply posting a kneejerk reaction, then you'd know that I enjoyed Halo, but I can't credit it above the respect it deserves. I love Unreal, but it had some major problems, and Unreal II was a huge disappointment. Shin Megami Tensei is my favorite RPG series after the Ultima's, and I have a plethora of issues with the contact and fusion systems. All games have flaws: including Halo.
The creators of Halo knew it had problems, just like any developer. They're working to fix those problems in Halo 2, and because they had such a popular title, they have also been given the leeway to get it done right this time rather than being rushed to launch. Fans wanted it to be released last November on the anniversary of the XBox launch. Rumors were that Microsoft wanted that release as well. Now, as a fan of the game (but not a fanboy), I want a good game rather than a rushed product. But maybe that's just me.
Your jealously comment is laughable, though. I'm not jealous of the Halo team any more than I am of any successful team. It would be rather stupid to be jealous of a hard-working group like the Bungie developers. I don't think anyone on this site is jealous of them, either. It's always good to see a dedicated team be successful. Of course, the jealously comment is a common one thrown out by fanboys whenever something negative and often honest is said about their favorite title. Rational players will debate flaws and achievements, but fanboys will scream bloody murder about the affront to their favorite title "of all time." It doesn't matter what game it is: GTA, Diable, Everquest, Halo, Pokemon, or Final Fantasy. The "valid arguments" are usually the same.
Anyway, I'll stop co-hijacking this topic and make a topical post here in a little while.

Comments like this remind me of people who think that OPM and Nintendo Power aren't horribly biased magazines. If it's based on the XBox game sales, then yes, I think Halo has sold more copies than any other game for the system. What is the context of these comments?
