Demo Terrain Level

I've promised a terrain to a couple of people a while ago, but for one reason or another never actually followed through with that. To make amends until I do get around to that I made a very basic terrain to be used for whatever purpose, mostly just to showcase people's work. I then thought it'd be a good idea to make it available for anyone to use for this, and so I packaged it up and uploaded it to Box.
If you'd like a terrain to build on, or just to see what you can do with terrains in Torque 3D, you can download it from here.
I have tested it in both T3D 3.0 (MIT) and T3D 1.2 and it works just fine. On the off chance it doesn't however, don't hesitate to email me (address is in my profile) describing your issue/s. I've included a readme to help newcomers with installation, as well as a separate postfx preset in case you want to use that also. If I get any emails that show the readme wasn't followed, I'll trash them without replying.
I hope someone finds this useful.
By request, you can see what it looks like (without the sky, but with the included postfx preset which is optional) here or below.

About the author
I do terrains. Lots of other stuff too, but mostly terrains. I die in games more often than not because I'm admiring the view.

You mean me, or users generally? Because I think I have some small amount of knowledge on the subject. :P
The thing is, when you start getting into the details of terrain creation, you realise just how specialised the field is and at some point you'll need to ask yourself if you really have the time available (as a solo developer) to devote to it. I've been doing pretty much nothing but terrains for years now, and I'm nowhere near where I want to be in terms of skill. Not everyone has the same singular drive, and most want to make games. This decade if possible.
Sooner or later, developers (individuals and teams) must prioritise their needs in the interest of getting shit done.

Maybe I could cut it even more short:
Basically, if you have a piece of land, erosion will affect it over time.
You have rain that falls down, that grabs soil and washes it away, forming these little groovings you have in your picture where the soil flows in little rivers, but only when it rains.
These little rivers will accumulate in basins and fill them out with flat soil/sand over time, forming valleys and lakes, but if they run over they will again form rivers flowing further through the landscapes to the lower areas until they end in the ocean.
Rivers itself will eat through terrain over time, an extreme example is the great canyon.
Also you have wind blowing soil/sand away over time forming dunes and leaving rocks exposed, since they withstand the wind much more.
Basically that's is. ;)

I mean generally and it does not cost you much time, maybe a day dedicated to this would be enough.Maybe I could cut it even more short:

Probably the same, since it is too complicated for me to understand and I don't have the will to learn it at the moment.

Ok, just for you, that is how my terrain may look tomorrow, but I did not spend that much time on it:

Well, in the interest of keeping this thread visually entertaining at least, here's mine.

You need to make a before and after. First you make a random terrain, show it and then erode it more and show it again, so the effects of erosion is visible.

Why don't you do some work, instead of talking shit? :D

I don't need to do anything. This is my thread. Why don't you do some work, instead of talking shit? :D

Sorry I'm late to the party, but I just want to say that this thread is quite funny. Also, here is a terrain that I made (with a little bit of Dan's help) postimg.org/gallery/90ne2hzw/0708da82/

Dan has some issues when it comes to being agitated. It has to do with high velocity flight (mach 5 and above), absorption of radionuclide particles at those high velocities, and using the wrong kind of ink for tattoos. Oh, and maybe a bit of space madness. But other than that he is completely normal...for GG that is... ;)

I know this thread is old but...
You really make some awesome terrain :o) Damn it looks good...

Thanks DK. Sorry for the late reply btw... I haven't been working with T3d for months now, and I missed this little update. I appreciate your praise. :D

well the same here actually. I am working in another engine now. I kind of met the 65.000 poly wall with Torque(among many issues and limitations) and got tired of cutting models into pieces :O)
I use WorldMachine to make terrains and worlds now. Damn that is fun and fast :O)
What environment do you currently work in?

Glad you're enjoying WM.

I haven't switched engines. I stopped developing altogether. I'm now making the final preparations for a trans-Australia bicycle tour. I'll be cycling alone across 5,000km of desert and bush from Brisbane (on the east coast) to Perth (on the west coast) starting in about a month or so, and taking around 8 weeks. Then, next July/August, I'll be doing Iceland. I can't wait!Glad you're enjoying WM.
