cam vs AltEye

Working on conversion of art assets into T3D. What are the functions of EYE, cam and AltEye?
From looking at the Soldier rigging:
It looks like cam is the camera node that can be detached from the model.
AltEye matches what I've seen in PG's MMO Kit as Eye. A skeleton mounted first person camera.
EYE in the Soldier is skeleton mounted inside the head.
I'm guessing AltEye is first person when the player character is rendered, and EYE is first person when the player char is not rendered.
