And here, my friends, is the catch:

Quote: AS A CONDITION OF ENTERING THE CONTEST, AND TO THE EXTENT LEGALLY PERMISSIBLE, ALL ENTRY FORMS, GAME ENTRIES, AND THEIR RESPECTIVE CONTENT, AND ALL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS THEREIN WILL BE OWNED EXCLUSIVELY BY THE FOUNDATION. EACH ENTRANT WILL BE REQUIRED TO ASSIGN ALL OWNERSHIP OF A GAME IDEA AND THE GAME ENTRY, AND ALL INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS IN THAT GAME IDEA AND GAME ENTRY, TO THE FOUNDATION IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE CONTEST.

IF YOU WANT TO CONTINUE WORK ON YOUR GAME IDEA AFTER THE CONTEST, OR WANT OR HOPE TO SELL IT TO A THIRD PARTY SOMETIME IN THE FUTURE, DO NOT ENTER YOUR GAME IDEA INTO THIS CONTEST.

That *is* pretty restrictive - I hadn't noticed that. It's almost a *disincentive*. More reasonable would be to invoke a clause like that for winning entries, but not for *all* entries. It will be interesting to see if that catch draws much fire from the developer community.

If you want my IP rights for a product, you're going to have to give me something in exchange.

This is entirely the kind of thing the people at GG having been trying to get everyone to move away from. Building a game is all well and nice, building a brand is where the real potential is.

This kills that stone dead.

Despite $25,000 not being a bad amount of money. Most of us wouldn't sell a completed project (assuming they actually complete) for $25,000 let alone for a CHANCE at $25k. I guess most won't ever earn that, but the vast majority will have cost more than that in our time to produce.

Tell you what, anyone with a decent completed game come to me and i'll "buy it" for a >chance< at $100,000 :) Hell make that a million... :)

Wowsers... and that's even if you don't win the booty.

You mean all I have to do is kick up 25g's and hundreds of people will GIVE me ownership of their ideas and hard work???

As an exercise I would like everyone reading this to do the following:
1 - figure out the number of months you been working on your project.
2 - figure out how much you get paid at your real job in a month (before taxes).
3 - multiply the numbers together (assuming you work 40 hours on your project).
4 - have a coworker or family member pick you up off the floor (this is assuming you too almost passed out seeing the amount of money and time you've invested).

I don't know about you, but I should have just held a dozen of these contests and then spent the past few years at the beach or something. :)

Seriously there's no fun in being given a game, the fun is creating it. My point is that these guys are going to walk away with hundreds of ideas and demos for only $25K, not bad.

John.

Heh!...for a chance at $25k I'm willing to fork over my IP rights for tons of my really BAD game ideas.
