Bumble Bee released on iPad, with source code

by Conor O'Kane · in iTorque 2D · 02/02/2012 (9:09 pm) · 12 replies

I've ported my Global Game Jam entry "The Last Flight of the Bumble Bee" to the iPad. It's available now for free on the App Store.

Download the game for Windows, Mac or iPad and get the source code here:

Trailer on YouTube

The source code is released under a creative commons license, which means you're free to use it in your own commercial games if you wish. All that I require is a comment in the credits saying "Some code provided by Conor O'Kane - cokane.com"

That's a great looking "Bullet Hell" game.

I like how the 'pollinate' feature encourages the player to make themselves vulnerable by standing still.

Fantastic work Conor! Much thanks for contributing this back to the iT2D community. You should post a full blog about this.

Loves it.
If you spent a month on it, improving gameplay in various ways and a few other knicks and knacks (like snazzing up the art) I see no reason why this couldn't do well. Its fun!

Ps. that song is awesome. Who made it?

Doug - Thanks, the pollination is actually the main scoring mechanic, so unlike most shmups you're not rewarded for shooting anything.

Mich - I've posted a short blog, I might write up some more detail on what's exactly in the scripts later.

Rennie - You're too kind! Only a month needed to improve it - that's not bad considering it was made in 2 days :-) I made the music using the iMS-20 app on the iPad. I also did the scripting and the art was done by an artist I met at the Game Jam called Ivan Dixon.

Thats cool.
I am serious. I think this engine you could spin into a successful title. Your enemy AI, mainly the bullets is classic space ship side scroll but excellently done.

The 8 bit art goes with the 8 bit music. However, if you were to do a pro version of this game ( I dont necessarily mean a Bee game, can be any object game, flying or no, however the bee thing is coool.) But honestly if you put some time into just making this game a little more thought out you could have something.

I would consult with you if you ever wanted.

And the music?! BanGER. I love it. I thinks I might get me that app now I have been looking for a nice little music program for the iPad. Do you have a music page? How long have you been making music for? UI have been doing it since 98. Check out Ren Quiet City or Mangoes Cash for listens.

Anyhow, loves it. When I saw you made it in 48 hours a spat out my milk!

Thanks for the resource. Any updates on drone swarm?

Rennie - I highly recommend the Korg iMS-20 app, it's great fun. A little tricky to learn, but there's lots of YouTube videos about it and the original MS-20 synth.

Johnny - hope the source is of some use. It was written pretty quickly so it might have some strangeness :-) I'm currently making a promo movie for DroneSwarm in preparation for launch. It's still 'coming soon'!

Yah looks really cool Connor. Not about to drop any bones on it yet but did you do the whole thing in the korg app? Did you use any other programs at all?

Rennie - yes the entire music track was done with iMS-20 on the iPad. I used Goldwave on my PC to record it from the iPad, but that was only because I didn't have wifi access during the game jam... normally you can just upload the song to soundcloud.

Here's another tune I made with the iMS-20 app: www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLcwtiYzKnA
