Original music for your game

Hello, developers. My name is Andrew Riley, composer and sound designer for Lucky Lion Studios, a newly launched game audio service.
My website is home to a Royalty-Free Video Game Music Library currently containing 40 original compositions available for purchase and immediate download.
As a special promotion for the studio's launch, each song in the library is currently just $5.
If you're looking for custom music or sound design, I can work with most styles - just fill out the website's custom audio form and I'll get back to you with an estimate.
I can answer any additional questions here or through the contact form on my website. Thanks!

Nice work. How much would you charge for an all original soundtrack for a small game that would only need about 5 to 10 songs?

I'm also curious about how much you charge per song.

Both of these questions were handled via the contact form on my website, for those wondering.

We are also in the process of completely revamping the layout of the library, so any suggestions would be very appreciated.

Are you planning on adding any retro/8-bit style songs? I could really use some for my game, and I see you don't have much in the way of that. Great prices, though!

Thank you. I've also updated the library yet again, bringing the total to 75 songs, but nothing retro (aside from RPG style tracks) just yet. I'm actually going to try to add at least two retro style tracks in my next update due to a number of requests for them. The song GeoPRISIM is fairly retro, in the meantime.

This pretty much makes it useless for my needs. I am not even sure why this is included. If you have to redistribute with a product then why would you need permission to remix? The license already states:
BTW, I do like what I have listened to so far.

I like the idea of your offering but have issues with this part of the license:Quote:Changes or additions to the composition of the song, however, are not permitted without the prior approval of Lucky Lion Studios. This includes adding vocals or creating remixes.

Quote:You are not permitted to resell the music as a music-only product. The music must be used as an accompaniment to the main production (video games, film, digital presentations or applications, etc). Why would someone not be able to alter it to better fit their theme or mood they are setting in a scene. That is equivalent to buying an asset like a texture or 3d object not being able to modify.
BTW, I do like what I have listened to so far.

What the portion of the license agreement that you've quoted means is pretty simple: for $5, you're buying the license to use the song, not any ownership rights to the composition itself. If you'd like a remix, as the FAQ states, I can provide that service - most likely for a small fee. If you wanted to add vocals, I would suggest contacting me about it. "...without the prior approval of Lucky Lion Studios," being a key part of that sentence.
I should also be clear that this does not restrict you from creating smaller loops out of the larger song or fading a track out when needed. But if you're looking to add a guitar solo to the song to better fit your scene, that's something I would need to approve of first.
I apologize if that creates an inconvenience for you, but feel free to contact me directly if you have any specific questions or requests.

Would simple modifications such as changing the pitch or volume require extra permissions?
#15
Pitch - Altering the pitch wouldn't be a problem either since you're technically not altering the composition itself. It would most likely sound terrible, though :)

Volume - not at all. I believe I have a line somewhere in the license stating that altering the volume is obviously fine.Pitch - Altering the pitch wouldn't be a problem either since you're technically not altering the composition itself. It would most likely sound terrible, though :)

That sounds great! I'm going to be checking the music later. I need some for a game.

Thanks for the explanation. Yes, I believe $5 is a steal so I can see why you would charge for remixes. I just did a comparison for other audio sources and some charge $1500 a track for use in one game. $5 is very very low.
What if the mix is real time? One concept I have for game music is to mix things in real time to change the mood of a scene. I have toyed with the idea of adding a midi synth to do it completely in real time with no prerecorded tracks. However, it may reduce processing quite a bit to do a base track then doing real time mixing of notes and samples to change the mood. Would we need permission for that?

That's a very interesting concept. I'm not sure how well it would work with the tracks in my library, but since you wouldn't actually be altering the original track you technically wouldn't be required to get my permission, no. I would be really interested to hear your final product if you decide to give it a shot.

If I'm understanding the concept correctly, you were thinking of adding real time layers (possibly MIDI?) on top of a prerecorded track (in this case, one of my songs) which would change depending on the mood you wanted at that time? For example, if you get low on health, a layer might be added to increase the urgency of the song? That's a very interesting concept.
