About being multi-skilled or focusing on one thing....

I myself have a decent artistic ability and am currently adding to my range of skills with programming languages like C++ and C#. I also mess with level editors and such to improve my design skills. I am more productive when I mix and match throughout the day. Surely having a solid hold in art and at least educated yourself with practice in programming and constantly improving is a good thing?

Heard so many say specialisation is everything but considering the way the economy is going, the more skills you have the better (more valuable through versatility)?

I think it depends on whether you have a team or are a lone wolf. A lone developer must have some skill at everything, otherwise they won't get far. I started off knowing a bit about programming, and even went for a minor degree in Computer Science. I also took some classes in Photoshop, and learned 3D modeling on my own. Actually, I might be just as good at art as I am at programming now, which is still pretty intermediate though. ;)

If you're looking for a job with an established company though, I think they would want you highly skilled in one area.

Make sense alright if going to large company. My goal is to stick to small studios as I prefer the work culture. But still the speciality is probably still needed I suppose.
