preview of my new iTGB app - Coloring 4 Kids
by Johnny Vo · in iTorque 2D · 06/25/2010 (12:51 pm) · 16 replies
I just wanted to give you guys a preview of my new app - Coloring 4 Kids. I was a little worried about using iTGB to build a non-game app but it turned out well. The app was built using itgb 1.3beta.
This Coloring Book has a neat feature that grades any pictures colored. More detail can be found on my website: www.enlevel.com/coloring-4-kids
The app has been submitted to Apple and I'll update this post once it's been approved. Would love to have feedback from the Torque community.

Johnny, it looks great. Nice job! Intersting that you're still using 1.3beta. Don't trust the new versions? ;)

@Mark - Thanks! 1.4beta2 gave me a lot of problems. It could have been something I did but it was frustrating. I do want to port it over to the next 1.4 for the iPad.

@Scott - Thanks! My niece loves it. She runs around the house when she gets an A+ on a picture and shows off to everyone.@Mark - Thanks! 1.4beta2 gave me a lot of problems. It could have been something I did but it was frustrating. I do want to port it over to the next 1.4 for the iPad.

Johnny, what can I say, very impressed :) The only thing I can think of adding - and you may already have it - is an age level so that the much younger kids can still use it e.g. reduce the number of colors in coloring box, pictures that are easier to color etc. Otherwise, it looks to me to have the making of a great app, nice one!

Thanks for the kind words. I'm working on more pictures for the next free update.

Scott, I was going back and forth on how many colors to put in. Your suggestion is great and I'll mess around with having 2 color palettes. Thanks for the kind words. I'm working on more pictures for the next free update.

- My five and eight year old daughters loved the app - oddly enough my five year old preferred the education coloring ... but I think that was because of the voices ... which brings me to ...
- It would be nice to have a voice for every picture - just to announce the picture you are coloring.
- A voice for when you select the color would be good - it helps younger kids recognise colors
- Both kids had some minor problems with selecting the colors - I did wonder about a large popup color wheel type image where it is easy to select the colors. The wheel could be crayons arranged around a circle
- My five year old didn't really understand the grading system ... so I wondered if a star system would work better ? You could also have bronze, silver, gold stars etc
- I think the app should let the player know what they have to do to achieve the higher grades
- Both were disappointed that the frames weren't still there after they'd taken a piccy for the photo gallery - nice feature BTW :)
- Future version might have a gallery of completed work with the stars showing
- If you go with a gallery then collecting player's name is a must
- Both wanted more frames and stickers - my kids love stickers!
Otherwise very good implementation of an electronic coloring book :) I'll be leaving an iTunes review in the UK store as well.

I plan to implement most of these suggestions spread out to the next couple of updates.
Some comments:
- I'm happy to hear your girls like the education coloring! I wanted to make that enjoyable.
- I wanted a voice for every picture title also. I'm going to look into that.
- I thought it was hard to know what color you selected sometimes. Love your suggestion. I'll probably change the coloring selecting a little bit in a future update.
- The grading system - my niece would always say, "How come I got an A and not A+?" She doesn't get it either but when she gets an A+, she gets really excited. I like the suggestion of letting the user know how to improve the grade. I think i can do this in a non distracting way. Thanks for bringing it up.
- The gallery idea is great. I know players will lose track of what colorings they did. This is a great idea and I will have to take some time to implement this right.
- More frames and stickers? You got it!
Thanks again, Scott.

Very nice App Johnny. You should definitely get on the iPad version quickly - iPad seems to be very supportive of educational/kids apps, they even have a section devoted to it in the iPad app store.

Good work Johnny, it just kept on getting better. Did you do all the art work? Regardless, great job, very effective.

@Rennie - Thanks! I know you've just started, but give us some WIP screenshots when you can!
I'm such a terrible art person. The art was done by Michael Yatskar and Debug Design. They both did a great job.

@Conor - I agree about the iPad version. I'm waiting for 1.4 RC to get released and then I'm going to start on the ipad asap. keep us updated with DroneSwarm, it's looking good so far.@Rennie - Thanks! I know you've just started, but give us some WIP screenshots when you can!

And yeah, they did do a great job. They design of the game, the functionality, layout, even the little thing that "turns" when you select a section to colour is brilliant. I can see how this can bring in the kids... and bored adults!
Good job.

I will soon, with in a few weeks for sure I will have pics, videos. Speaking of new apps, how long, generally does it take for an app to gain approval by Apple and put in the store? And yeah, they did do a great job. Good job.
