[BUG 1.1 beta1] Particle editor appears borkened

Is it just me? I can seem to make some particles and emitters but they wont save.
Sometimes I get unpredictable results, the particles persist when deleted from the level but have no icons or properties associated with them.
Different particles within the emitter appear to produce colour changes or various flashing lighting effects when they interact with each other, is it an alpha problem of some kind?
I can make some basic emitters which do appear to save but the particles are very dim and just basic torch flame and such, can't seem to edit the parameters either.
Sometimes it crashes the world editor.
A tutorial and some docs would be nice too, feel like I'm stumbling around in the dark here.
