Torque3D...ATI HD5750 vs GeForce GTS 250 ?????
by Harvey Greensall · in Torque 3D Professional · 04/01/2010 (12:42 pm) · 14 replies
Hey all,
I'm just putting together a new rig to take the best in game video possible of our Toque3D title.
Can anyone advise which of these cards would best suit Torque3D? My budget will stretch to ATI HD5750 or GeForce GTS 250 ...... We're using PhysX in some areas of the game BTW.
the PC is an AMD Phenom Quad 3.2 Ghz, 4 gig DDR3 ram, Windows 7 etc.
Any thoughts? Does it make much difference?
Many thanks in advance

(Nvidia drivers giving a GPU lock up in T3D when using lots of particles for projectile trial across a full reflect ocean, lock ups on other games -- Nvidia's last drivers get pulled due to them blowing up peoples' computers ....)
Leon said on these forums that he'd swapped from Nvidia to Ati and this had cleared his GPU crashes/locks.
So ... kinda depends how temporary Nvidia's crap drivers are going to be before they add some stability to them and stop going after "power at any cost".

I've got a 250, and it's great ... except I've become increasingly concerned at the quality of Nvidia's drivers recently ... b) why not compile an automatic demo and ask somebody with an expensive setup to record the vid for you? As long as they only need to start the recording, start your demo and upload the uncut raw video, it shouldnt be much of a problem :)

Yeah. That said, I still prefer nVidia's cards, but it might be more of a brand loyalty at this point than an actual unbiased opinion. nVidia generally has the money and industry pull to make sure software works with their cards, and I sometimes see Ati playing catch-up in this regard. And there's the PhysX hardware issue if that matters to you.

@Steve: How about those ones that actually fried the cards? The drivers weren't reading the temperature sensor correctly, so the fans would stay at 15% even while the card was literally frying itself. The best part was that the drivers they told everyone to downgrade to? Those ones had the exact same bug (196.21 I believe).Yeah. Thankfully I missed that update and always monitor my GPU temp.
Oh looky ... there's a new Nvidia driver, promising not to blow up your computer ...

As for Ramihyn's suggestion, how about GG releasing a benchmark version of TGEA and T3D that reads the PC specs, runs benchmarks and creates a small results .mht document, i'm pretty sure, i can get bunches of people to run that and send the data to me, and i'm sure theres lots of other projects here that can do similar and forward the data.
As for the real choices, while ATI seem to be faster per quid but in general nvidia are more stable and compatible if the general consensus of review sites are anything to go by.

Ive been an nvidia fan ever since the fiasco over drivers cheating the benchmark tests. Currentlt running a GTX 260 after i upgraded from an 8800GTX because of it overheating, how old is this overheating issue, and i was under the impression that the core itself adjusted its consumption the same way CPUs doAs for Ramihyn's suggestion, how about GG releasing a benchmark version of TGEA and T3D that reads the PC specs, runs benchmarks and creates a small results .mht document, i'm pretty sure, i can get bunches of people to run that and send the data to me, and i'm sure theres lots of other projects here that can do similar and forward the data.

With the fix, all is peachy :) but I would advise against getting the card since the series obviously has some internal issues that require workarounds in the configurations.

ROFL... I had to laugh about NVIDIAs 'bad' drivers!!! I have basically the same build as the original poster and I have an XFX ATI 5750 video card in it. I like the card alot....BUT...They have a small problem with all of the 5xxx series cards right now. I had to get instructions to change some configuration stuff for it to stop crashing almost every 5 min. With the fix, all is peachy :) but I would advise against getting the card since the series obviously has some internal issues that require workarounds in the configurations.

Well, the new driver (197.13) seems okay -- also "NO CORRUPTION WHEN SHOOTING OVER WATER!" which makes a nice change ... still locks up though, but no bad GPU crash.

I have however had plenty of decal issues that would crash the system (I believe this has been fixed but I can't recall)
Edit: I wonder if the issues with the nvidia driver were related to the Power saving settings like they are on the ATI cards...

@ Steve: Yeah, I have not had to deal with that lousy 'feature' LOLI have however had plenty of decal issues that would crash the system (I believe this has been fixed but I can't recall)

@Steve, yup, we get the GPU lockup shooting over water too. I'm led to believe that this should be fixed in the next release of Torque3D though ( we hope).
I'm leaning towards the ATI setup if there's an outside chance of it making the lockup any beter for the time being, also I have one NVidea rig, all be it an 8800GT ( also has the GPU lockup) so at least then I can test in both graphic setups too.
I just didn't want to go down that route if someone jumped in and said no Torque3D is 20% better on an Nvidea card, or something like that so big thanks all ! 8)

I think one of the main draws for Nvidia is the Physx via hardware rather than software emulation on an Ati.

The only issue I'm having is anything PhysX is crashing the game. I'm guessing I need some drivers to use PhysX on an ATI setup or something.....Looking into it........

Well, I went for an ATI 5770 in the end. My framerate was around 20FPS on my old PC, is now well over 80 for the same scene 8)The only issue I'm having is anything PhysX is crashing the game. I'm guessing I need some drivers to use PhysX on an ATI setup or something.....Looking into it........

I just don't know if it's gonna be in the next 1.1 release or in 1.2.
(BTW, I'd go for the HD 5XXX series myself if only because they run much cooler, quieter and consume very little when idling - which is a must when you live in a furnace like myself).

About video recording, there are some nice stuff in the future on that area, from yours truly ;).I just don't know if it's gonna be in the next 1.1 release or in 1.2.

The 'fix' they had me implement involved creating a custom profile that kept the card warmer and didn't lower the power quite as much when idling.
I'm glad someone was able to use the 'feature' to their advantage :) I love my card now that it has stopped being a pain in the -bleep-

Manoel, that running cool and quiet is exactly the problem they have had with the ati 5xxx series :) They got too cold and started to lock up when idling!!!The 'fix' they had me implement involved creating a custom profile that kept the card warmer and didn't lower the power quite as much when idling.
