Art project: Cathedral

So I've decided that I need a fun artistic project to suppliment work where I don't get to be so artistic (for those who don't know, I work as a level designer for A2M). The project: bring Winchester Cathedral to Torque. It's been quite a while since I've worked with Torque so this will help refresh my memory on the processes (which have changed since I worked with it). This isn't a massive project like building a game, but it is quite large in terms of an art piece. For some reason I have had a passion for cathedrals for years. I'm by no means an expert on them in any way shape or form, I just find them beautiful and fascinating. The ultimate combination of function and form. Anyway, the project begins tonight. I'll update once a week as a sort of weekly meeting with myself. First up design. Since I'm already using a prebuilt cathedral, design is a piece of cake. Find reference and divide it into sections.

Plan for the week:
- find reference images
- divide cathedral into very small pieces
- start building

I'm looking to start building by Wednesday. Shouldn't be a problem, I've already gathered a fair amount of reference. Looking forward to building!

Nice! I love cathedrals. Make sure to post screenshots of your progress! Perhaps with shiny particle lights shining through stained glass windows.

Yeah, this could be a beautiful piece of work, you planning on skinning it with bump / normal maps aswell? Would look great :D:D

I have a passion for cathrales and churchs too, and I got a lot of documentation at home (I worked 3 years as a guid in the cathedrale of Reims).
This is a great project! Do you plan to modelise indoor part of the cathedrale ?

hey ... wait a minut ... do you speak french ? :)

I'll definitely be posting progress as I go. For now it's just going to be cathedral exterior textured and working in Torque. The specs aren't going to be typical torque though, I'm going higher def then that. The indoor area might be the next project ;).

Oui, je parle francais mais mon francais est pas tros bon. I'll be taking some french courses in the relatively near future though since french is the first language of a lot of the people where I work.

Another cathedral fan here. They are amazing buildings both technically and artistically and each one is unique. I'm really looking forward to seeing your progress. As David Blake said there's great oppurtunity for some cool lighting with the stained glass but it would be great to see some nice detail on bits of stonework specific to the cathedral you choose (if you were to pick Wells for example thats got the faces of the builders sculpted into the stonework).
