Tentative title: Above and Beyond

* massively multiplayer, persistent universe.
* each player starts with a solar system containing a randomly generated number, size and type of planet. at least one planet will be within the solar systems "habitable zone". lucky players will have more than one.
* client-server/peer to peer network with each client/peer containing the players solar system which other players may visit by transiting with their ship(s) through the solar systems on the server network.
* free flowing 3d environment, able to move through a city on foot, into a ship on the edge of the city, then take off from the planets surface and off into deep space or space station.
* a continuous research tree by using server introduced patches that introduce "new technologies" into the game.
* a resource and information based economy with player formed organizations that have either an economic or militaristic purpose.
* resource gathering from a planets surface or from asteroids in space.
* PC Player characters (AI bots) that perform various tasks and are awarded as the player achieves milestones in character development, i.e.; ranking and total assets.
* remote manipulation of assets including, but not limited to, fleets, AI bots, and cities.

The Above and Beyond concept calls for a massively multiplayer, persistent universe game where each player starts out as an active member and ultimate ruler of a sentient race somewhere in the galaxy. A players main goal is to develop the technology necessary to venture out into space through wormholes or warp engine for mining, colonization, trade, or conquest of adjoining systems on the server network. As well, a the player can trade with or attack another player's systems. Both player characters and non-player characters are ranked against each other in experience and moral alignment. Success in most any endeavor results in increases in experience, while the action taken determines the increase or decrease in moral alignment. Some players will be benevolent, while others will be malevolent, and the resulting battles between the good and the evil will result in a totally evolving, player created story line for the game.

Above and Beyond will mix aspects Homeworld, Quake, Everquest, Master of Orion, Wing Commander: Privateer, Battlecruiser 3000AD, Mankind and Jumpgate. Players will research technology which will allow them to build cities, space ships, and space stations populated by non-player characters and player characters in a 3D environment. As the player's race grows and the player colonizes other systems, the player can form organizations with other players that employ both player characters and non-play characters. These employees, even the non-player characters, can be assigned fleets, cities, or space stations to control, as well as perform routine tasks such as the buying and selling of resources, building additional assets, and exploring space. Even the non-player characters will attain experience and morality points when an assigned mission is completed, which will add to the over all experience and morality ranking of a players organization. Management of the player's empire is carried out through a command line style interface.

Above and Beyond will be designed from the ground up to cater to the style of gaming the player likes the most. In the employ of a more experienced and larger player, a new or less involved player can...
* explore a planets and asteroids for resources in either a 3D FPS or flight sim view
* trade in resources, technology, or information in either a 3D FPS or flight sim view
* fight on ground in a 3D FPS view
* fight in air or space in a flight sim view
* perform resource management duties of a single city, a planet of cities, a solar system, or the entire organization in a 3D isometric view
* control large troops or fleets of non-player characters in a 3D isometric view

For a large empire, the duties one could hire another player to perform are numerous, but if there are no players to accept a possible position the AI engine will perform the basic duties necessary. This will allow independence for those players not interested in joining a larger organization.

One interesting aspect of Above and Beyond is that it would run as a service in the background and provide a variety of services including a web based control system a player could use to almost literally play the game from a web browser of any computer connected to the internet using a player's self-registered domain name or IP as the address. This "server" would allow the player communicate with other players, manage their empire, and view real-time statistics on the state of the known galaxy.

The increasing use of high speed cable, DSL, and other "always on" internet connections and the popularity of online games such as Everquest, Mankind, and Jumpgate, combined with the well established popularity of simulation games of all kinds and role playing games, it is hoped that Above and Beyond would sell in excess of a 500,000 annual subscriptions world wide.
