New dev team creating first Hentai game with T3D

Hello, we are Dynasoul. We are creating a game on the the Torque 3D game engine and we will be posting occasional journal updates of our progress. We are a two person team of artists who came up with the idea to create the kind of hentai game we always wanted to play. These blog posts will not contain adult imagery and will only focus on the technical background aspects of creating a game from start to finish.

Our project is called Nocturne Rain. It is a third person, contextually driven, love story. It features 7 unique characters, a wonderfully detailed setting to explore, and a captivating storyline to make the adult situations more meaningful.

I have an extensive technical background using Windows and many relevant art programs and am teaching many of these technical skills to my partner, who is a quick learner. She lives for art, and is in turn teaching me how to unlock my full artistic potential.

Our plans for the future involve learning how to use the Torque game engine, learning TorqueScript, and finally the completion of Nocturne Rain ;)

In this blog post we will briefly talk about how we created our logo. The 2 programs we used were:

*Inkscape
*FontForge

Many of you may have already heard of Inkscape, it is an open source vector based graphics editor available for many operating systems and downloadable at www.inkscape.org.
What you may not have heard of is a program called FontForge. fontforge.org (And if you have you would know that it's pretty awesome!)

The first thing we did was try out different existing fonts to see what we liked and disliked, what worked and what didn't work in terms of what we wanted to see in our logo. We wanted our logo to be very expressive while still remaining legible.

We talked about each font individually. We really enjoyed the expressiveness of the last font example, it was very dynamic and had interesting colors but we ran into a problem. The font used was downloaded from one of those free font sites quite a while ago and we were not sure what the actual licensing terms for using the font commercially were. After looking at our choices we decided to go down the route of creating our own font from scratch, and so we decided to venture down the long and rigorous journey of creating a font using FontForge (which really wasn't rigorous, or even long, after all.)

First we sketched out a quick example of what we wanted our logo to look like. Once we had this reference we set out to learn more about using FontForge. We expected this to be somewhat of a complicated ordeal but it turns out that if you know how to use Inkscape you already know how to use FontForge! We started with 'D' and figured out the workflow, which for us boiled down to picking the letter we wanted to create, creating a vector representation of the letter using FontForge's built in editor, and finally saving and generating the font (Making sure the Font Name and Family Name were different from each other). Then letting FontForge autofix (Wow!) every issue automatically so it passes its font validation check. We did this for every letter and eventually we had completed our logo!

Then we went into Inkscape and messed around with colors and pretty nifty graphical configurations until this came out. Look at it! She's BEAUTIFUL!

I made the 'D', my partner made the 'L', and everything seemed to fall perfectly in between. But the best part was we managed to find a balance and keep the essence of the earlier shown sketch.

@Lukas, we are both glad that you found the post informative, we plan on being very open about some of the challenges we encounter and how we went about finding a solution. In particular, we will be posting our experiences with T3D as we implement our prototype.

Bonetown was TGEA? Didn't know that, did know that mode7 turned it down and made Frozen Synapse instead.
