Last year I attended the Global Game Jam for a few minutes while passing through one of the local sites. I’m no stranger to “games in a day”, but this was a visibly different experience. I really felt like I missed out by not attending the full event.

Two weeks ago, when the Torque team mentioned that we still have the opportunity to participate, I remembered missing out and we decided that we, as a team, should not. We brainstormed and decided to host a location, film Lou talking about rapid prototyping, and offer participants a free trial license ( along with some other promotions listed below).

When it comes to hosting a location, I’d love for someone to try and exceed what the Red Rock Casino delivers –we are hoping to provide the best experience of the entire jam (OK, so the pride in our venue is not really in the spirit of the event, but I can’t help it). Not only is it a beautiful casino, it’s also the location of this year’s D.I.C.E Summit. I’m glad we get the chance to “break in” the place for all the game execs and industry "aces" that will be landing in our back yard. You’re welcome guys. The casino has all the amenities you need including a food court, day care, bowling alley, cinema center, …slot machines. In addition, we are planning some promotions that we think adds to an already awesome event.

Download GGJ Torque3D Binary

static.torquepowered.com/static/pg/blogs/eric/TorqueLogoSmall.pngBinary Eval – We are offering everyone participating around the world our binary eval ( full featured binary ) for use during the event. The eval will convert into a demo version the Sunday after GDC (March 14th) so that you have time to show your goods to everyone in San Francisco. Come visit us at GDC and show us what you’ve made –we love that stuff. The binary is available now on our site so you can start practicing with our tool set.

static.torquepowered.com/static/pg/blogs/eric/TorqueLogoSmall.pngDinner w/ the Strategy Team – The Torque strategy team, Matt, Derek, Michael, and myself will look at all of the games at 5:00pm on Saturday. If we think your game has the most potential for fun ( hard to tell at that stage), we’ll take your team out to dinner at the casino buffet. It’s on us.

static.torquepowered.com/static/pg/blogs/eric/TorqueLogoSmall.pngLou Castle Presentation – We will be starting the event at 4:00pm PST at the Red Rock Casino conference center on the 5th floor. We filmed Lou last week (he will be out of town unfortunately and won’t make the event) giving a presentation on rapid prototyping. It’s a great way to start. He has a lot of experience prototyping games and the video is very, very, informative.

static.torquepowered.com/static/pg/blogs/eric/TorqueLogoSmall.pngEngine Giveaways – We will be giving away 3 copies of full featured Torque3D (non-binary) and 7 copies of Torque3D binary. To win, e-mail us at ggj@torquepowered.com right now! Licenses will be given away in order we receive the e-mails. You must participate at the Red Rock location to receive your prize. The price of Torque3D - airfare + hotel room > 0 for many of you ( sorry international folks ).

So there you have it! We can’t wait. I’ve seen a bunch of game design ideas scribbled on white boards at our office -hope they are as fun as they look.

I'm really looking forward to this event!

It has been too long since I've done pure game development rather than engine development and I have been hankering for a Game in a Day type event for a while now =)

Nice work again GG, Any kind of live uplink for the event for internationals or people who cannot make it? I am sure most would still want to be part of the action.

Sadly enjoying summer in Manly, Australia. Also, anyone who is keen to get a GG group together in Sydney let me know? FranticAU@gmail.com

@Cory - There is a GGJ location in Sydney, which isn't too far from Manly (as you know). You could definitely participate in GGJ, join in the Torque festivities with us US folks =)

Sounds fun. I'm actually glad that TP/GG moved to Las Vegas. Makes it easier for me to get out there and cheaper too!

Anyone interested in checking out some of last year's GGJ games, IndieGames did a rundown of their
favorites.

Gamasutra also had some great global coverage of the 2009 event.

Unfortunately for those working on attending the Las Vegas game jam location, it looks like the Red Rock Casino Hotel is booked solid the 28th and 29th. I'm not familiar with Las Vegas, so I can't comment on the next best place to stay for this event.

If you want to be near Red Rock, do a search for hotels in Summerlin Las Vegas. Red Rock is on Charleston Ave, which intersects with Town Center Drive. That's a major intersection, and a nearby search results in Suncoast Casino and Hotel, Holiday Inns, Marriotts, etc.

There's also the spare room at my place, but this is a "friends only" offer =) (this would include transportation to and from the event, plus maybe a drive down to The Strip).

I just spoke with them about the rooms. You might consider trying them again as some of their rooms are only comp'd and might become available if they aren't taken. The Superbowl is to blame for the lack of space.

I've had reports of good stays at the following locations:

La Quinta
Element
Sun Coast

I'd recommend the Sun Coast. It is a Boyd Casino and it isn't that far away. There is a Vons just kitty corner to it if you want to walk to it to purchase food and items. It is in a nice neighborhood as well. It is further away from the strip but then again the Red Rock is pretty far away from the strip as well.

I did register but I don't really need a seat I just want to be able to come in and watch what I can while I can. I won't be able to be there for some of Friday, some of Saturday and all of Sunday so.
