GDNet: Weekend Reading

You might notice me getting picky lately. Well, you probably won't actually unless you're a journal author who notices I made no mention of you whatsoever. Rest assured I still read every new entry each week. I'm just trying my best not to overdo it. Too much. Editing is always a fine balance between having enough content and having content that actually matters to people who read it. I don't think I'm quite there yet but I definitely feel myself getting closer.
Journal Land Pick of the Week
Oddgames development journal - O-san has a short video clip of his character moving around a small level to demonstrate the physics, but also note the lighting and layering as well. I really like what O-san has been doing with his editor, game and Iso work in general. I dunno what it is about Iso games but the whole perspective issue just makes things seem more challenging to me, so seeing it pulled off so nicely is always a treat.
From the Staff
* Gaiiden's Scroll - No guesses last week as to what awesome occasion is arriving in less than 2 weeks. C'mon people! Seriously. Also new resources and events. And I totally love my new avatar. Ninja + yellow = win.
Project Updates
* The Bag of Holding - ApochPiQ has an updated list of things still to do for R7, as well as new things that have been implemented in Epoch
* Ye Olde Ramblings - Telastyn continues his work on the Tangent documentation, with a lot of new code examples
* Radioactive-Software - dgreen02 has two new updates on Warbots Online, with the accompanying drool-worthy pictures. May I say that wasting my time looking at pictures and videos over the years was entertaining, you're welcome Dan, but I'd rather do it while playing a game ;)
* Happenings with VBStrider and Crew - this week's newsletter has a new company banner, Loradon progress hits 75%, programmer book recommendation, a completed image from the artist's easel, and community spotlight
* epic.fail - evolutional has a video demonstrating per-pixel destruction and describes his new implimentation, and also figures out how to represent indestructable areas (like a landing pad)
* Bennu - Demosthenes has three updates on the game: a game website, a video showcasing new particle effects, and that it's in the final peer review process for XBL Community
* Untitled - Tape_Worm has a new version of his Gorgon engine, a 2D graphics library for .NET and SlimDX.
Game Dev Stuffs
* Journal of Lethargic Programmers - cameni shows off some vertical and horizontal displacement results in his terrain engine, which produces an awesome-looking craggy cliff face. Collision detection issues to be discussed at a later date. Also if large math equations make you faint don't click on that link. I wish I'd had that warning.
* Big Trouble In Little Chairtown - Drilian talks about the research he put into designing the networking for his shmup (shoot-em-up - I like that), including links to resources he looked up, a comparison of his project to the network-heavy FPS genre and two types of networking methodoligies. Oh and this is part one
* Merry Prankster Games - gdunbar talks about the tools he uses to make programmer art, inspired by a similarly-themed blog post by Rampant Coyote. You can also find some more programmer art tips in this GDNet article
* Chronicles of the Hieroglyph - Jason Z shares a video and code to his Navier-Stokes Equations water solver, which he built using compute shaders to run completely on D3D11 GPUs
* All Things Scheme - okonomiyaki has restarted his blog with a genetic algorithm in Scheme that evolves into the Mona Lisa
* Excursions into the Unknown - Mike.Popoloski has uncovered something of interest within the bowels of MDX, namely the way it handles force feedback behavior. He describes it as "hilarious"
* Horror Stories of RanBlade's game development - RanBlade shares a very quick lesson learned in bug hunting - looking outside the apparent problem
* Trapper Zoid's Trapper Keeper - Trapper Zoid has a round up of his own recent blog posts over at his other site. A round up within a round up. One worth mentioning is about him learning Python
Other Stuffs
* Readme.txt - Khawk has a fun little Flash "game" where you can drive a car around a blank canvas, painting with your tires. Give it a spin it's actually pretty fun and modeled off an actual artist project of the same notion.
* My personal space of thoughts... - Metron is looking for hints on how to construct an ultra-silent server machine that doesn't heat up too much, for under $1500 (optomistically)
* Mark the Artist Messes Around - Prinz Eugn is looking for some projects to work on. Check out his pixel art talents if you're in need of some great 2D graphics
* Journal of MrCpaw - MrCpaw has launched a new studio website. Check it out and leave him some feedback
* Any Colour You Like - benryves is back to sharing his electronic tinkering, this time using Sony (or compatible) remote controls to control software running on a Windows PC
* Journal of Aardvajk - Aardvajk has an interesting little app that converts tabs to spaces for text stored in your clipboard, useful for pasting code from your IDE into a browser
