Weekend Reading: Tales from Journal Land

by Drew -Gaiiden- Sikora · 03/14/2008 (9:18 pm) · 2 comments

Welcome to the first edition (although I'm not going to be keeping track) of this new "feature" I'm starting. Each and every Friday night (or thereabouts - hey, it's Friday night!) I'm going to be listing journal posts that I found worth reading throughout the week for you all to enjoy as well if you haven't already. We have a lot of good stuff that comes out of Journal Land over at GDNet, from game project updates, to random work stories, to thoughtful views on various development aspects. If you don't have anything better to read over the weekend, then read these!

* Gaiiden's Scroll - Find out how the GDC went for GDNet this year, pick up a few tips on attending conferences, and leave some feedback for next year!
* Memoirs of a Graphics Engine - check out some cool photos of the Geist3D engine in action modeling the coastal regions of British Columbia using digital elevation models (DEM) and Landsat7 satellite images
* Radioactive-Software - Dan Green updates us all on Urban Empires with a video and screenshots of the completed set of city props with physics
* The Code Zone Bargain Basement Blog - John (with the help of his daughter) reviews the OLPC
* Excursions into the Unknown - It's time for "The Daily Funnies from Help Wanted"! Vote for your favorite! (also take the time to recognize the seriousness behind the post)
* MudCake Dev Diary - some thoughts on how to create grass textures for a 3D tile game
* Wacom + YouTube, part 2 - another cool video of Boolean drawing something
* Journal of Rawr - mittens gets fed up and goes on an all-out furball rant about things he finds annoying in games
* The Bag of Holding - learn what happens when you don't properly factor a new programmer into the team (and try not to read too much into the "disappearance" of said programmer... or you may be next)
* Journal of Impeller Head Games - in-game video of a roadster speeding down a drag strip. I like fast cars. Sue me.

See you all next week.

that's the plan. its popularity will keep me honest - everyone likes the idea so to keep the angry mobs at bay I will make sure be consistent. :)
