Plan for Rusty Highsmith

by Dustin \"Rusty\" Highsmith · 07/27/2007 (9:02 pm) · 9 comments

So the other day i was looking at some Halo stuff, and I realized that it would be totally possible to make a re-creation of Halo. But then I thought, "Nah, Halo's already been made." I had forgotten about the book prequel, The Fall of Reach. Thus began a new project for Halo: TFoR. I already have all the models I need, from Halo Custom Edition tags, so why not? I thought. As long as I didn't try and sell it without M$'s permission, it would be fine. So, I have started Halo: TFoR in hopes that people will like it when it is completed.

If anyone would like to help, just message me. (I think there's a private messaging thing on GG...)

No PM's here. No sticky topics, post previews or a decent search method either. :(

LOL yet another Halo clone.. just make your own game and get it on the market. Oh, your previous blog says you're having trouble forking over the $150 to get the license. Without being able to spend even that minute amount on your game, it will be extremely difficult to get a REASONABLY good game completed.

Thats illegal. And no one will play it. Seriously. You pay money for an engine, but I think you really need to pay for creativity...

Neill, technically it is violating copyright laws, but the companies are known to tolerate it. Many communities are around focased around fangame creation, and they are certainly not shady or underground. For example:

http://mfgg.net/ - Huge Mario fangame community, has appeared on television at least once.
http://sonicfangameshq.com/ - Long running Sonic the Hedgehog community, I think someone was creating a game with Torque as well.

But since we are talking about Halo here, someone created this, pretty good, 2D version of Halo. I think you can find it here: http://www.dobermannsoftware.com/index.php?p=games&g=1

Halo fan games last until MS wants to make a similar product. For instance, the C&C Generals total mod HaloGen was shut down a few weeks before Halo Wars was announced. Seeing as a Halo prequel is quite possible, I wouldn't risk it.

And besides, as much as I love Halo, you're much better off creating your own game. Take the best parts from Halo, but leave behind the mistakes.

I agree with the others, but in a more constructive way, start by making Halo the way you want it to be played. Then change everything about it to be your own. There is nothing wrong with emulating the game play in Halo - and not a copyright infringement either. Halo isn't that great, it's just the same goons shooting the same monkey aliens, over and over. I'm sure you could come up with something better.

Focus on the first level and everything needed to make it, then polish it. Making one level is really hard. In my spare time it took me 10 months to make a level for my pack. Mine was a quick shooter with power ups, door key system and boss - it's a challenge. Oh yeah and make placeholder art until you get the game play down.

For example if you want to do a space marine, start with a free character (or Kork is the obvious choice) and set up the other systems first. So don't bother making a space marine to get your game running - give Kork a laser gun first, then work on the aliens (could just be the green tutorial guys) - get what I mean? Get your game play going first until it's polished then worry about the art later.

If your game play is good then waste the time at the end working on the art, rather than now, and finding out it was too hard to get everything done.

That's should be enough encouragement for you to give it a go. Nothing says "do it" like a bunch of people telling you "don't" (hey I justed coined a phrase) ... good luck and please email me (click on my name for email) if you need help with graphics or scripting or just general Torque help.

I am creating two of my own games, this is simply a side project.
I have to say, I am appalled at the lack of civility from some of you.
Niell, I have plenty of creativity. Try not to judge a book by it's cover next time.

I'm a Halo fan, and I saw the possibility of making Halo. I see nothing wrong with that.

Thanks for the tips, Andy.

When you say you are appalled at the lack of civility - I wouldn't call it that. Everyone here is trying to help you out, some more to the point than others.

People at GG are way more friendly and helpful than any other forum, I think what you are seeing here is people assisting you by cautioning you about making an official Halo game without the right steps in place.

Good luck anyhow, and the offer remains if you need any help. I am doing FPS sci fi shooter stuff for the rest of the year with my game so chances are you will be working on the same tech as me and I don't mind sharing.

Thanks.

Only problem I have is no one on my team is a 3d modeler.
