TO Jam #2: The 2nd Annual Toronto Indie Game Jam

by Rob Segal · 05/26/2007 (2:45 pm) · 0 comments

TO Jam #2 was recently held in Toronto from May 4-6, 2007. 62 people from Toronto and it's surrounding areas came together for this prestigious event and truly it couldn't have turned out much better than it did.

Much like the original Indie Game Jam the basic concept of the Toronto Indie Game Jam was to create a game in 3 days. Last years event was a great success and there was no doubt there had to be a sequel. You can download the games created at last years event here. People were incredible committed to finishing their project with some people even sleeping right at their desks or on the floor beside their desks.

Check out some photos from the event showing off the skills of these intrepid warriors here.

Several Torque Game Builder games were created for the event...

Quiver - A two player shooter with one player controlling the archer and the other playing as a dungeon master. The dungeon master presses keys to generate enemies which the archer has to kill. Both players gain experience as long as the game goes on. The game ends when the archer is killed so the dungeon master has to make sure he/she isn't overloading the archer player ending the game.

You can download Quiver here.

Promotion - The goal of the game is to replace your boss in 3 weeks. However only less intelligent people get promoted. Therefore you must resist growing your IQ at all costs.

Promotion is not available for download just yet on the ToJam website but it will certainly be up there soon. Be sure to check out the website often and certainly I will edit this post once we have Promotion ready to go on the website.

Benny Hinn's Bible Blast For Cash - This was my teams game! Roam the streets of Toronto converting atheists and citizens into cash for the ministries of Benny Hinn. If you make it through the streets face of against the Devil for ultimate payoff! A great achievement in artistic genius. The two artists whom I worked with for this game (Nick Coombe and Matt Coombe) took video footage of Matt walking in various positions and in various clothing. Value village proved invaluable for cheap stuff to purchase. This video was then converted into animated sprites used in Torque. The result is that all the enemies in the game and the player ARE Matt Coombe. Makes for some rather hilarious and unique visuals. All the textures on the buildings are from photos taken of actual builds in Toronto by Nick Coombe. Here's some screenshots...

As one of the organizers of this event it gives me great pride to share these creations with the GarageGames community. Toronto has some great game development talent and this was greatly displayed by the games I've noted here
