Fresh Paint, and some seasonal inspiration (image heavy)

*Warning- IMAGE HEAVY*
What a month it has been. Another year goes by in my life as my 32nd birthday passes, and my sons 4th birthday becomes a pacman partyfest. the leaves have started turning, frost has hit the ground, which means longer nights and shorter days. Its funny to wake up in the dark and by dinner it be dark again. And its only October. Where we live its dark till past 9 and starts getting dark at 5 in the depths of winter. Just a few miles north of here it get worse. Which means, more time inside.

We are working hard now to get the alpha finished for the new year. so close, we are polishing up some of the boards, with a blast of inspiration I completely blew the old city layout out of the water.

Yes, I know the visible range is kinda short, but the effect is correct from the players point of view on the ground.

Here in Winnipeg we finally finished our second comic episode, and with great fanfare we released it at our local comic convention ComicCon where we also met "Q" from the startrek series as well as Lou Ferrigno (also known as the Incredible Hulk)

For you guys, exclusive the first half of the comic, enjoy we hope to have the next one out for the next quarter.

We hope that you guys have enjoyed the progress so far, everymonth we strive to bring you something new and exciting. We hope to have a new trailer up for christmas to celebrate the new year and we hope to finish up the core items :)

Oh we are looking for some help with some of our AFX items, if you are interested in making some extra money, we have some small and large items to off you.
Fantasci: Hidden War ...For TGEa?

Wow, what impressive annoucements, TGEa for Mac, several long talked about titles reaching alpha and beta test. I am excited for the next year of Torque. Who knows if we get some more interest you will see Fantasci, converted to TGEa. It has been looked at, depending on manpower and availability of resouces.

Anyway, so What have we been up to.

a prototype of one of our tunnels area. Its in greenlight becuase i was using another area that happened to have them at the time. Ill get a long shot later when its all cleaned up.

A empty hall in the atlantean senate. Its not populated with npcs or objects yet. but i thought that i was a good start for the senate hall (you think the romans had 100 watt lightbulbs sitting around inside?)

Id like to thank one of the resource makers here for the making of the blue marble setup, after a backport to TGE i was able to prototype the end game cinematic scene. This is the earth portion from the opening cinematic.

and i have been waiting for like over 7 days for the snapshot of the day to show this off in a nicer format. So since this is the my monthly blog, i felt it appropiate. Special thanks to my cg artist. and for those that dont read the FAQ for Daz or CArrera, you can use the renders for anything. Its the models themselves that are copyrighted. I had a few folks that mentioned it. Its clearly stated in the FAQ.

So Team wise, we are still looking for folks that are willing to contribute and take interest in the project on a long term basis. We have interviewed alot of folks. But what we see is disturbing, a uncanny list of folks that say they have better things and plans, then they fail miserably 6months later. Does it look like we are failing? We just have a larger scope then most project. Got any questions, want to be a artist, programmer, 2d artist, animator for Fantasci? Give me a email at racs333@hotmail.com or drop by our infosite www.fantascihiddenwar.com

Want to see something? want to ask a question or comment. Just give us a shout here!! Till next time.

Fantasci: A Fresh Start, Alpha Progress

Well, for those that have been keeping up with my weekly blog at www.mydreamrpg.com, you know we have dropped from the contest. We have moved our weekly blog to www.fantascihiddenwar.com there you will find links to all our media, as well as a leader blog with some personal commentary. But all progress. We even have added a load of new and old pics to our Gallery for your viewing pleasure.

The contest as far as our team is concerned is behind us, so we are starting to get the real work underway. We are finally tying up the Alpha game mechanics. We have come a long way. I had to cringe in horror as we are in the process of hooking up the Abilities screens and im looking at a list of almost 100 different abilities. With a sigh and a muster of breath I have started into that. What else has gone on this month.

Swamp has never looked so good.

This is the before shot of the entrance to the city.

This is what happens after a artist does his magic.

Some Weapons testing with our new Magic Staves. special thanks to GolemGraphics.

And lastly we have started doing some upgrades for our Scifi area. This Staging area will be host to the Protection Force of the City wall.

So I said a fresh start. Let me reintroduce Fantasci, for those that are curious.

Fantasci: Hidden War is a 1st/3rd Person RPG with Shooter and RPG elements seamlessly integrated. Fantasci is a Singleplayer story that sets up a very large multiplayer storyarc. Many of the playable elements within Fantasci are simply the testbeds for the MMO elements.

We hope that you take the time to visit our website, check out the media and gallery pages. And most of all that you leave comments and share your opinion. We have vowed to have a open development example till we finish the alpha stage, to serve as both a example to new players that dare to say they want to do a project of such scope and as a testiment that large projects can be taken on by a small team. Dedication, Honesty, and Setting /Evaluating Goals make these projects possible.

www.fantascihiddenwar.com (Dont forget to BookMark me)
s144.photobucket.com/albums/r183/racs333/?start=0

We no longer maintain our blog on www.mydreamrpg.com and will continue on our website as well as here on a regular monthly basis(weekly on the website)

Not just 1-2 live ai, each of those purple dots is a live and active Ai, actually, you can see on the radar and ahead on the screen their targeting and name info.

one of our Fire Elf CG concepts (created using Cararra pro/Daz)

our Dark Elf CG Concept. She did terrific work with these CG mockups.

A exclusive look at another piece of our concept art, this one from the Altantean Archemdian weapons section.

Our fighter minigame and racing area.

So we have been making Fantasci a huge world. coding content. I have lost count to the amount of models and interiors we have made in the last year. But If anyone needed proof that were making progress, and Fantasci is coming to a PC and Mac near your soon. Its here. With the only project thats faithfully posted weekly at our Blog, and Monthly here, keeping you informed to the progress, in our Open Development setup. However, once we complete the alpha build. We will be closing our open doors and the next time you see us will be our beta testing. Id also note that this project was done without a kit or prefab other then the AFX. And so far with a small team. We arent done yet. But we are very close to wrapping up this alpha build.

Anything you guys want to see? just speak up. We would love to sneak out some requests :)

How Far Fantasci Has Come

Wow, I was looking over my Blog from a year ago. Faithfully, I have been maintaining this Blog every month, in conjunction with my Weekly Blog that details the open development of Fantasci. A year ago i was detailing my first very successful attempts to make some spacecraft with constructor. For those that dont remember it. A preverbial blast from the past.
www.garagegames.com/blogs/75893/13008

Fantasci has come a long way, from a single mmo project, to a three part Extravaganze. We have been working hard with programming with such notable names as Mark Dynna and Kittle, even contracts from DEDEN, and a interest from several high profile artists. Fantasci has kept on course, with a massive storyline and scope that rivals any small project, i have just gotten to one of my favorite cities, the Dark Elf City. some WIP items for those that dont keep up with my Blog.

As Well as some of our WIP GUI, We have chosen to not go with a prefab setup for any of our GUIs. We are remaining true to replace or remove as much if not all the prefab/kit material that we found relavent. It is a slow process. We are waiting on some code to remove the old AFX bar. Already these GUI pics are out of date, as we add in the popup code for the loot, add tranparencies, create additional icons for quick keys.

and one of our pics with some of our Visual Damage popups.

also a recap of the other city/zone for those that dont keep up with our weekly blog.

and some Static Discharge effects in one of our Scifi levels.

I want to take the time right now to thank those that have taken time to release some very useful tutorials that make alot of Fantasci possible. By listening to advice from the past posts and paying attention to forum posts, it has made break throughs for us. I also wanted to thank my team for making it so far, 15 months now is no small feat to work on 1 game, and one of such scope. We are slowly knocking out the functionality portions and well slowly turn to our Content phase and then its all polish and updates. :)

We would like to think that Fantasci is a example of what a serious minded Indie can do when they take a large idea and build on a idea step by step. My secret. I dont come to the board thinking lets take a prefab kit and make WoW. Wont happen and if you think it will happen you will fail. But if you know what you want. And build all your systems one at a time, building them one at a time, adding on like a lego system. The secret to this, is planning ahead. Do the research. Know that if your going to have some kind of persistance, you will need a DB in the future. Create a rubust DB first, then build on it. Keep it simple at first. Simple inventory, check, then lets add special modifies to the inventory, lets the add special ammo, and so forth. Dont try to through it all at once. This is a huge issue with teams with more then 1 programmer. The trick here. Organization. Assign 1 person to over see a specific task (or group of persons) and Complete the task before handing it off the the next task.

Over all, Persistance. Persistance of mind, Persistance of Story, Persistance of Ponfidance. I see Fantasci as it will be. I see it as a huge success. Fantasci 2: Spoils of War(Working title) is already being looked at in my spare time, so that Fantasci: Hidden War is being built to accomadate the Multiplayer version, which will be built on the storyline and information being gathered from the first project. Like a Snowball. We could do Fantasci: Hidden War as a MMORPG from the start. But honestly, Its too large of a project for a new studio to take off in 1 bite. So small bites and poof, a reasonable timeline, a managable project setup. And lots of great surprises.

Thanks for stopping by, We enjoy doing these blogs as we continue to give everyone a open development picture of what goes into a project. We do plan to close the open development stuff up as we close up our alpha phase, probably in 3-4 months. Dont forget if you havent already we have a weekly blog going back these 15 months at.
www.mydreamrpg.com/community/showthread.php?p=13479
Some of our movies and a free player manual (already a bit out of date, but a good pointer)
hosted.filefront.com/racs333
www.fantascihiddenwar.com

Interested in joining Fantasci's Team Drop me a line at racs333@hotmail.com. We are looking for artists and programmers that are interest in a long term project and might be interested in the challenge brought by 7 genres of game world, and a monster selection of items, monsters and models.

Conventions are fun

Welcome Back Folks, we made it back from the local Scifi and Fantasci Convention, with such writers and artists as Eric Flint and David Mattingly, had the new 4th edition premeired to us. and we had a great time showcasing our Demo. We have had our first episode of our comic come through, and with a small hitch with our projector the first night. We had a blast.

Our game Fantasci got much attention with a few local programming and gaming enthusiasts looking at us. We will see what turns up. Whos read for some screenshots of our recent stuff? We are working on the next few mission areas, now that Keycon is over my schedule has freed up to do some more creative work.

and last but not least our special edition comic from Keycon, promoting Fantasci, with a 22 page special comic contract we will be release more as each episode gets finished, then recompiled to be released with every copy of Fantasci. Enjoy!!

Special thanks to Ian and Sanya for making this happen
www.ianthecomicartist.com

Fantasci: One task down, Another few to go

Here we are as the contest strikes 13 months, another 5 days and its pens down for the judges to take the next 2 months to evaluate and sift through the contestants entries. We have learned alot, had some up times and some down times, infact lets go through some of them shall we... Nice dissolve...

Lets Start with the fun stuff the cons of the contest and Fantasci.
Cons
Individuals that dont know how to communicate and follow through with tasks. Now we arent talking about folks that say i dont know how to do this. Im talking folks that say they will do something, and after several weeks of proding they come back with a hours worth of work and say this is all we can get done in a month, even though they know that the week before when they were talking about going out with friends or claim they simply didnt have time. I want to note that in every single case, i have offered to pay for the work, in most cases it was full professional rates or similar. Why dont they finish? I chock it up to laziness and a lack of work ethic. But i digress.

Second item was some of the contests most frustrating moments, with the several occurances of the arcanoria phiasco, the point judgement issue with another, and a small host of folks that had a wall of solitude around their games. Most or all of these games have pulled out, But they are worth noting as the definite down sides of this contest.
A general lack of support from any sponsors and such. in general other then CVSDUDE (which btw we will be buying another year of, great service) I would have expected more sponsorship support. From anyone. We have alot of folks that i know that little extra incentive might have made a difference to produce some great ideas. In the end, we got what we got. And here we are.

PROS
We succeeded, we are at the finish line, this is the first stage of my final reports, its not the end of Fantasci, No sir, we are well into our alpha development, with a host of features just now entering their prime.
We are starting to shape up Fantasci into what it was meant to be. Sure we have had to down size some. Its no longer a MMO, its no longer a skimpy rag of a idea. Its a solid framework thats being built up. Piece by piece.
We have gone with the single player mode, in fact, one thing i have to do, is go over our Design document and get that final draft out to you all. Thats right. a Public release of our Contest Design document. It wont be today, but It will be before next wednsday, the contest cut off. We believe in building a community.
We have one of the largest viewing rates in the mydreamrpg contest. And i dont believe to be bots either, its pretty steady, with 80-100 hits per posting. we have a currently at a 81% view to post ratio, one of the largest on the site. We hope that attests to the popularity
We have one of the most original and ambitios projects still in the contest, and we havent used a Kit, We were originally using the mmokit, but after the gryphon development went to Torque school, i made the call to move to a clean engine (AFX 1.5.2 and to start building our frame work, using pieces from the old mmokit, and around the net) We have finally gotten some of our large milestones out of the way. Merchants, Inventory, AI placement, Dialogue, Racing.
What Racing? you mentioned racing, Yes, we finally got racing in and its awesome. We have a choice of 3 vehicles currently to ride. The Dranix, our newest addition, the Horse, and the GG buggy. Just go to the training area and look at for the green console screen. Its to the left.
We have a great Team, folks that have joined and understood what im looking for, have thrived and seen some improvement, in most cases daily a little it gets done. on some days particularly early on, entire maps were drawn up.
I am currently unware of any team that has such as large world design, and i might note that it is possible to walk from the start of the game.. to almost all the maps... thats right. walk, via zoning. not using ashort cut, but if you can find your way back to the original alien research starter zone. all the major zones will be unlocked.
Well so thats a few points to note. There is a lot of stuff to note, and some of its trivial, some of its pretty important, but for this post i wanted to just glance over some of the high and lows. We want folks to know that Fantasci isnt going away. We are just starting to dig into the meat of the work, and some of our contracts are just starting to finish up some of the best work. Namely our comic, Keycon is coming up. We expect some additional interest there. So much to do, so little time.

So what have we been up to this last month since we posted here? for those that know, we have a weekly blog that we have been keeping, We try to digest alot of that here, so that those that have very busy days can either see one of the other. We do occassionally try to sneak some new stuff in once in a while.

One of our new mounts from concept to finish

A view of our current models for players, were slowly phasing out the orcs and elves, but you might notice, these are all customs and even a few of the orcs have a few custom skins(thanks GG) :) not as pretty as some, but very functional.

So where do we go from here, the contest is wrapping up, we still dont know a winner, but we have decided to continue development of Fantasci, We have strong core team, a strong sense of direction and a lot of steam, We aim to create one of the most indepth storylines that can be made with the torque engine. Its a high aim, but we hope that after its all wrapped up we can be proud of the work we have accomplished.

Fantasci: Hidden War Alpha success

We have almost got into our last month of this contest another month and a week, and the public side of the contest is closed. We have seen some great interest in alot of the enteries, including ours. We are excited to see what we can show you all in the next period of time, before we close our open development and complete the alpha material. We are excited to get to our beta stage. It is not long.

So what has our alpha launch shown us. We have lots of work to do, We have had a few folks join us, notable Beowulf from the Neoastra game. We have a few folks that we are in talk with. Hopefully after this contest we will have some solid information that we can relay to you. Due to the contest we know alot of folks are sitting back and waiting to see if a)we have the guts to finish a task or B) have something behind our words. As always of course we do.

For some of you that are just joining us. We are working on the alpha during the contest. We have had our first round of updates go out.

1.0.1 Updates and bug fixes
-------------------------------------------------------------
Atlantia texture and update on falling off platforms
Complete Restructure of the Scifi and Fantasy zonings into game configuration. You can still travel to the alien zone, but you have to find the portal.
8 new missions, Mainly for the scifi and Fantasy areas.
Several new Buildings for the new missions, including several specifically for the Priest zone
Added Items for the Fantasy zone to give it life and some more idea of how it will look when its completely functional.
Inventory continues to be improved, many new bugfixes(Mark is working overtime to get this ready as soon as possible for full use)
Upgrades on graphics and Icons. We are working on the color of the icons, this was one of biggest complaints. Were currently working on correcting this, we will probably have this ready for a full rollout by next update on the 28th.

Bugs and known Issues
------------------------------------------------------------------
Several Terrain issues with characters getting stuck in the fantasy and earth areas(We are tracking them down as we find them)
We are working to resolve the color and issue of stacking inventory/ability Guis.
Several issue with the models. This has been passed on to the modelers, we hope to get them resolved as soon as they get a chance upgrade.
Mouse look and Onscreen selection was broken, it is being looked at. In the interm, Press Z will turn the mouselook on, we have had that in before, but its something we have some complaints about.
One of the portals in the Scifi zone is randomly sending folks to different areas.. Our programmers are baffled since its hard coded. We are looking at our zoning code.
Lack of AI, we are going to be adding some ai to fight in the Fantasy area. It should liven things up alot. But the other areas are still a bit bare.

Now for the Fun stuff.

And there is more to come, we have another update coming up on the 28th. And it also is the last available chance for everyone and anyone to get into the alpha testing. Simply drop me a email at racs333@hotmail.com and have alpha in the title. And we will email you the required information to get into the next update scheduled for March 28th.

We wanted to make a note that we are very pleased to see the 1.7beta update. Currently we have no plans to transfer immediatly to 1.7, but we havent dismissed it. We have the Modernization Kit that we are ready to roll out with. But after the contest we are looking at possibly using the new setup. We will see where we are. Dont forget to come by and check out our weekly blog at
www.mydreamrpg.com/community/showthread.php?t=1594
or our official launch website site
www.fantascihiddenwar.com

Fantasci: HW Alpha Public Registration

We have reach the day of official launch, i can hear the keyboards clicking away. We have had to make a few items of note with our release. With the loss of our original programmer, much of his stuff had to be pulled (since he wasnt there to fix it with the new upgrades) So we lost a few items. But in the process we are starting a bit fresher. So in light of this let me explain.

Alpha 1.0 will be release tonight. It will essentially be our first open look at the enviroments and some of the other functions. We had to essential kill the ai and dialog for the initial launch do to bugs and other items. We have also had to halt on some of the levels, we didnt have time to light, debug and clean up of the levels, becuase somehow.. we lost our shapereplicator... really makes it a pain to do some effects without it.

We do plan to do two releases in this contest. Some folks have a weekly schedule, we are hoping to have a patcher system, but its on the list of things to do. We do plan to return Ai to the game for the next update. As well as some vehicles and Inventory. You will notice we are setup for it. We have as you noticed in the last 3 weeks been going through some fast changes and very busy. My new programmers assured me there will be a working inventory very soon (date not given) but im hoping it will be available by the end of this update cycle. As well as things to kill.

Without Ai we decided that we would only place some teaser art. Examples. The City centers, alot of them have some of the common animals, the gaurds in the main castle city, and if you check out the castle you will see the king.

We hope to that folks will take time to look around, and want to let folks now that yes some levels are empty. Examples are 4 of the fire levels are not finished, the atlantian levels are not complete since 2 of them are racing and vehicle specific levels. It makes it very hard to do those without Ai, and when your adding in multicharacter support( which when its fixed, alot of other items will finally be able to be fixed) So what we did was cleaned all the levels we could, turned the lights on, and giving you a uninterrupted tour of the world, these are a fraction of the levels of the full version. We have pretty much another 12 levels that i could pop over but they are not finished, and there is a bit of art that needs to be finished before we can turn them on. The next update the levels will be rearranged and you will not be able to view them as individual levels, so please enjoy them while you can select them. Those are striclty for ease of viewing. The next version 1.01 will not have the mission selector. And you will see essentially a evalution of game play from what you thought you saw, to what is developing.

Personally, i want to thank DGI and associates ahead of time, for this contest, it has seriously given me and my teammates(i hope) a eye opener on the way of the world of a indie developer. We wont be dropping this ball, what you see here is a essentially the prototype for Fantasci:hidden war, and its entire Saga. I have the original game planned as well as a entire story arc which i may have mentioned before, that will keep our studio and our team on the forfront of the challenges to come.

So what else? Well there isnt much else we can do but wait. I just have to upload this to our server.

But what we will do is create a mixed bag here. We want to go public, but we want to know who wants access to the downloads. So heres what we got. Anyone that wants access needs to do 2 things.

1)Email me at racs333@hotmail.com and request permission, make sure you have Alpha, in your Subject Line.

2)As a prequisite after viewing we need you to go to the alpha feedback forum and give your opinions and official feed back for the contest. www.mydreamrpg.com/contest/feedback.php

We need as many as you can pile on there. So lets keep them clean, and lets have the best launch we can. I will be posting again tommorow to confirm with everyone that the upload and everything is open. and be on the look out for your reply emails for the open alpha. All you have to do is ask.

Fantasci, New Movie and Screenshots

Greetings. We have begun ramping up our workload at bit. Vic, our 3d artist has started back on some of the last of our major models. We are hoping to make some more additions to our growing team. We got our new Title screen and Promotional title in.

We do have a new movie in this post, its down below, enjoy.

We have started contacting our other team members. We bought our musician, a new digital synthizer with over 400 different instruments. I love Christmas discounts. We bought a ton of stuff from a few other places. Some of which will make it into Fantasci, some will make it to some of the side projects that are on our back burner.

So what to expect. Well this upcoming week, i have the task of finishing setting up the teleporter system that goes from each mission and board. So you can expect to see some of the new original board shots, as We put together the new singleplayer demo. We have several board that will have sections that have been cut off from the players 800 years later, due to items such as damage, time, and contamination. We have finally gotten our first color promotional cover, this will be our CD cover and some of our promotion items. We are hoping that our 2d artists will have a draft of the next major promotional item by the end of the next month or 2.

blip.tv/file/362569
blip.tv/file/414662

We have got our Website back up.
www.fantascihiddenwar.com
We still dont have forums, We are looking for a full time webmaster to remedy some of those issues. And Yes, the gallery will be up soon, 56k isnt kind to the uploading process of so many photos. So if all goes well it will be up soon for you viewing pleasure. We hope that with our postive honest blogging, the huge amount of material that we have previewed to you our fans As well as the communication as Lead Producer, i have kept up with the rest of the community. We have been able to prove to you that Fantasci is the one of the best projects in this contest. Tick Tock.

Now as we show this movie, i wanted you guys to note this is all taken from a single mission, all the little green names you see, the Draat, are all Aiplayers that can be seen from the player. Alot of folks ask about framerates. FPS is good, fraps takes a bit of framerate, but at a average of 40 FPS i think we have some decent optimization. I made a note in the movie of the open air setup, rest be assure, this isnt a open level, we have ways of keeping a player contained.

/// MOVIE IS HERE ///////////////////////////////////////////////
files.filefront.com/Fantasci5wmv/;9482192;/fileinfo.html
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
*sorry fixed the link*

What are the Draat. The Draat are the game primary Badguys. They are part of a larger picture. The simpliest way to explain it, these are truly in the scope of the story the least of your worries. The Draat are organized into Castes, The Research Caste, the Warrior Caste, and the Master Class. In the Demo you will only see the Research Class, we have several items reserved for the full version.

These Draat are very passive, and direct in their observations. They have no understanding of human observations. Which is why you see the Fantasy zones and the Atlantis zones. Not to mention the Elves and Orcs variations. Which incidently, occured when the Draat observed that such creatures were indeed creatible and observable though their technological methods.

The Draat have a simple primary objective. Create and study human behavour for the purposes of understanding their method of creating War.

This is coupled with their nanotechnology, a biological compatible technology, that allows for flash cloning of new models and the ability to even channel a bodies internal energy to power weapons and fantasical effects at a distance. This basis of their technology allows for the creation of seemingly magical effects, and even the activation of latent psionic abilities found within their original test subjects. (This will be revealed probably during the Full Version).

So Yes, a layered and very indepth storyline. Each race has its own storylines, which get built on , with the full version set 800 years in the future after this version. You will find alot of neat and fun things that ill try to through in, creating not just another RPG, but a huge storyline with unique characters, races and backgrounds. Need more proof? Keep up with us and as we try to please.

Well thats all for this week. Whats next? Well that depends. Want to see something specific? Ask us, We are trying to run a fairly open development process. We love to please our fans.

I wanted to also make a notation that we are waiting to see how this quarter will end. We will keep you all informed and our ear to the ground on how things turn up. Were coming to the nitty gritty, want to see our demo, hang in there it will be released publicly probably soon after the contest. The more support we get the better our team and product will be. We are still looking for programmers and artist. Programmers must have a AFX liscence. Artists, just need to be dedicated to a awesome project with a long term goal. Dont believe us. Back up the 3 pages, check us out. Check my teams work, check my team out. Were a team, not a health spa.

For a more complete picture of our entire progress, our weekly Blog is:
www.mydreamrpg.com/community/showthread.php?t=1594
