Laptop, working, etc...

Well I graduated from college a while ago, so now I'm certified and things... I'm doing some consulting stuff with/for garage games, which I can't really say much else about, WOO! Also I'm working at a local computer store a day or two a week (although its been almost every weekday lately). I am trying to be involved here as much as I can though, so if anybody wants to chat or something feel free to drop me an email. I usually get back to people pretty fast and I hope I have some interesting and worthwhile opinions.

Thats said, rather than actually working on game stuff at the moment I'm playing with my new toy. My girlfriends father gave me his old laptop, a Gateway Solo 9300. I'm working on getting an install of Gentoo Linux on it so that it can better do my bidding. I'm pretty psyched. I think the battery might be mussed up though. Anyway, I live. I should be rolling out with interesting fun things for people in the near future. So um, watch this space and whatnot.

Graduating, Real Life, etc.

Well. I have been finished with classes for a few days, but the actual graduation ceremony is not until Monday (Why a weekday? I have not the foggiest). So I will very shortly hold a BS in Computer Science and be trying to make a living peddling my wares. That said, coolege has kept me busy enough lately that I have been nigh invisible around here.

I hope to correct that in the coming months. I will be doing some consulting type work on a couple projects with the good folks of GG whose details I can not (unfortunately) reveal. Needless to say its some neat stuff that should be cool and useful to many of you.

On the side I also hope to both be more visible and involved in the community as a whole and also to start on my first game project. Which should allow me, if nothing else, to have a project that I can actually tell others about. That would be refreshing to say the least.

My non-disclosure dismay and real world coping despair aside, I'm rather looking forward to what the future holds. I am greatful for the opportunity that I have been able to create for myself (with ample aide from the GarageGames guys toward my lowly internness). I'm excited to be leaving college and going directly into making games for a living. It has been my dream job for as long as I can remember and it seems like its finally coming true. I just hope that I can maintain it and go on to actually create the kinds of games I've always wanted to do (and avoid a real job), wish me luck...

continuing existance...

I am still around and at least somewhat active. Last semester was ultra busy so I really had little opportunity to get out and do game dev type things. I was very excited to see the RTS Starter Kit make it out the door though. The reaction from the community has been great (I know I'm a little late in this acknowledgment, sorry). Nice to see something out there with my name on it, and I even get a check with my name on it each month. Actually making some money from something I enjoy doing so much is a dream come true.

On that note, this semester has been much better and I've quietly been poking and prodding a few things. Looks like I have some pretty exciting pontential projects lined up. Nothing far enough along to really talk about yet I'm afraid though. If all goes well you'll see it soon enough.

In the shorter term I am fortunate enough to have been chosen by the International Game Developers Association as a Game Developer's Conference scholar. Which means that they have been kind enough to give me classic pass. I have yet to iron out which things I want to sit in at, but I should be available if anybody wants to chat. I'll be arriving Tuesday afternoon and the plane back leaves Friday at midnight. I look forward to meeting anybody thats around, and it sounds like I'm crashing with GarageGames folks, so you might look for me in/around their booth.

Slightly longer term I'll be graduating pretty soon. I thought a lot about what that should mean, and I have decided that indie development is something I would really like to give a chance. So, at least until the loan payments kick in I am going to give it a go and see how well I can manage. If after 9 months (I think thats when payments start) I'm in a good spot then thats where I'll stay. Otherwise I guess I'll have to concede temporary defeat and join the workforce. With the projects and contacts I've started to line up I have high hopes though. I'm sure I'll keep you all informed. Off to work...

Drugs are bad mmmkay...

This is a netgraph:

This is a netgraph in TGE:

Any questions?

P.S. To head off some questions:

Fields:
White: Ghosts Active
Red: Ghost Updates
Green: Bits Sent
Blue: Bits Received
Cyan: Latency
Black: Packet Loss

This has been added to the head if you wanna play with it. The NetGraph is built on top of a generalized graphing gui control. Feel free to use it for all your profiling needs, its relatively straightforward. The NetGraph itself is all set up script wise in torque/example/common/client/ui/NetGraphGui.gui if you wanna see the nitty gritty. It is also bound in both fps and racing default.bind.cs. So, if you compile the head and load a level, pressing the 'n' key should toggle the graph on and off. It starts updating when you first press the button, and continues until you shutdown torque. So it will continue to update when you hide it. I hope this is helpful to somebody.

Enjoy...

So it begins...

Well, I got in last night to Eugene. So I've arranged my accomodations (ie put sheets on the bed and set up my computer), bought some neccessities, stocked the cupboard, etc... Now to get on to the interesting part, I'll be heading in to the GarageGames office soon to take on my first day of work. I'll keep you posted, at least in so far as they let me...

GarageGames Internship Looming

I become a GarageGames intern very soonish. I should arrive at the intern house on or around May 24. I must say my excitement only grows at this point. Should be an awesome summer and I'm looking forward to working with the guys. I'll try to document what goes on, but no telling how much secrecy I'll be swarn to. Updates here periodically, but you can follow my exploits more closely at monki.geemus.com.
