We are pleased to announce the release of Torque Game Engine 1.5, featuring the integration of the popular Torque Lighting Kit, many updates and optimizations for the Macintosh platform, and the inclusion of the 3D visualization tool ShowTool Pro, along with several new art assets.

The Torque Lighting Kit represents several years worth of research, development, and quality assurance by developer John Kabus. Originally a separate product, the Torque Lighting Kit has not only been integrated into TGE for version 1.5, but it has also been re-factored to be cleaner and easier for Torque users to incorporate lighting into their games and environments, and to introduce their own custom lighting models. Additional lighting features include vastly improved interior rendering performance with dynamic lights, improved dynamic light blending on terrains, and updates to the TGE waterblock system which support higher geometry and texture detail.

In addition to the enhanced lighting features, Mac users will enjoy updated platform code which supports OS X 10.2 - 10.4, as well as several other essential Mac updates. Add to that the inclusion of ShowTool Pro and several new art assets, including a new character model and environmental art previously sold separately, and version 1.5 represents one of the largest upgrade to TGE in the engine's history.

For the first time in six years of development on the Torque Game Engine, we will be charging customers for the upgrade, although it is offered for free to customers who purchased TGE on or after August 1, 2006. Current TGE owners can upgrade to version 1.5 for $50, while owners of TGE and the Torque Lighting Kit can upgrade for only $25. The purchase price of the engine will also change with the new version, increasing to $150 for independent developers, hobbyists, and enthusiasts, and $749 for commercial users. Both licenses are royalty-free, offer unlimited publishing, private forum access, membership in the Torque Developer Network wiki, and access to the company's vast online resources and documentation.

YAAAAAY!

I think it should be free for the people who purchased the Torque Lighting Kit :P After all, we paid what TGE currently costs.

@Jedive - lol!

@GG - THANKS!!!! Thanks for a great product, thanks for keeping the prices low.

I'm glad to see 1.5 out for everyone :] However, I'm not looking forward to the comments about the price.

Syllus   (Oct 25, 2006 at 14:02 GMT)
screw the comments about the price.. these guys work there butts off and give us some very nice stuff at almost no cost... anyone who bashes the little bit of a price they do ask for is just flat out ungrateful and probably thinks the whole world owes them something... GG should be praised for their commitment to keeping a quality engine affordable for indie developers!

Thanks a ton guys.. we've all been waiting along time for this and I personally can't wait to dive in head first!!

So, should I upgrade to TGE 1.5, or just buy Torque Shader Engine? It seems like unless you have code invested in TGE the forward looking move is to just upgrade to TSE instead of paying the 50$ upgrade?

Tim Tillotson   (Oct 25, 2006 at 16:45 GMT)
Awesome. The content is the main reason to puchase TGE 1.5 instead of TSE. (Atleast currently..) You get a lot more content with it then you could get separately.

FYI, I got an error processing my credit card for the upgrade and called GG. They told me that due to the high demand for the this, their servers are at capacity and to try again later.

As TSE is still in development, you might want to buy TGE 1.5 if you want to start work on something now. The inclusion of the art makes it worth the purchase. For $25 I am glad to pay for someone else to do the integration betweek TLK and TGE. Now if we could get GG to do the same with RTS/TLK/TGE it would be worth the purchase price also!

Torque Advanced Technology is described as "Torque Game Engine Advanced" on the TGE 1.5 page. GG had a change of heart? Most wise.

I can't wait to download it! ^.^

Just downloaded it and took it for a spin. Outstanding work GG!! The demo orc village is 500 times more impressive than before. And yes, the interior lighting has been much improved as you said it would be. Integrated TLK into TGE is the real winner in this release.
Fantastic!!

Fantastic guys, really. This has definitely helped me make my decision on which engine to produce our game with.
