Central Institute of Technology in Perth, Western Australia is now in a unique position to be able to use Torque for our course Interactive Games Development for Certificate III, IV and Diploma stages. Torque offers various engines and accessibility that allow development of simple drag and drop games to extensive, professional 3D applications. I am also in the unique position, from using Torque and approving content of other Torque users, to expand on my experience to delivery feature-rich game development techniques in the classroom that are industry relevant and of triple-A quality. The net effect is students will graduate with skills that will allow them to hit the ground running when applying for work in the game industry.

THE "ALL IN ONE" CLASSROOM SOLUTION

The Torque Suite provides access to all of our 2D and 3D best-in-class development tools. Torque 3D allows educators to focus on the core components of game design and art without the software getting in the way. Students will be able to immediately put lessons into action using the exact same editor and engine that professional designers and programmers use to publish retail video games.

ACCESSABILITY FOR ANY LEVEL STUDENT

Entry level students will benefit from Torque 2D's drag-and-drop interface and simple behavior systems while advanced students are able to complete polished projects in a semester with the included genre kits and art resources. With this advanced toolset, students can create games on and deploy to both Mac and Windows computers.

THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR ANY TYPE OF CLASS

The Torque Suite allows students to foster their creativity and work in a tiered learning approach as they move through the educational program. Whether your program is centered on design, art, or programming, the Torque Suite provides a solid base to empower your students' success.

Each Student Seat Includes:

Torque 2D/iTorque 2D

Torque 2D is a powerful and easy to use game engine. In the classroom it is the perfect teaching tool to test and display real word game design, level editing, and applying script functions for physics, behaviors, and networking. iTorque 2D is included in the educational license so students and professors can see their games and projects in action on iOS devices including the iPhone, iPhone4, iPod touch, and iPad. iTorque 2D takes advantage of powerful iOS options including multi-touch systems, dragging, gyroscope, and accelerometer support.

Torsion

With Torsion professors and students are able to read, write, and test their TorqueScript projects within the same layout and environment. Torsion provides a number of advanced features that make teaching, learning, and using TorqueScript easier including: syntax highlighting, goto line and text searching, project tree view, one click script bebugging, step by step script execution for testing and teaching, and more.

Platformer Starter Kit

The best way to learn game design and programming is to create working game levels. The Platformer Starter Kit provides your students a jump start to creating fully playable levels. Use the platforms, ladders, ropes, hazards to avoid, items to collect, spawn points, check points, sound, animation, and object control included in this kit to quickly create example or full game levels. Basic AI behaviors and camera controls are also built into this kit.

Adventure Kit

For students interested in action, adventure, and role playing games, the TGB Adventure Kit allows you to focus on imagination and design without being a programmer or scripting expert. This kit allows you to drag and drop game elements and instantly test them in your game level. For those who want to go beyond game design you can use the items from the TGB Adventure Kit in a game level and then examine how the TorqueScript and code behind it works.

Kart Kit

The Kart Kit provides students and professors with the tools to create a "mode 7" style racing game like F-Zero or Super Mario Kart. The kit includes the example game "Cascadia Kart" -- a complete, published game with script, art, music, sounds, and source code. The Kart Kit documentation provides tutorials and instructions on how to modify the example game or build your own from scratch. The Kart Kit is fully optimized and tested on all supported 2D platforms.

2D Fantasy Character Pack

The 2D Fantasy Character Pack includes fifteen 2D characters, all animated and ready to be placed into a game level. You get the complete sprite sheets for these fantasy characters suitable for use in Torque 2D. Each animation sequence contains eight different directions, north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest.

Torque 3D

Torque 3D allows educators to focus on the core components of game design and art without having the software get in the way. Students will be able to immediately put lessons into action using the exact same editor and engine that professional designers and programmers use to publish retail video games. With Torque 3D you will be able to teach artificial intelligence programming, 3D modeling, animations and large scale terrain editing and implement those lessons in practical lab work.

AFX

Arcane-FX brings the power of special effects into Torque 3D. Easily create camera shaking, damage, healing, lighting, sounds effects, and more. The Scripted Effects Choreographer allows you to perfect the timing and placement of your effects. Arcane-FX comes with over 200 pages of documentation and tutorials making it a powerful tool in the classroom as well.

L3DT

L3DT is a terrain generation tool that allows students and professors to create highly detailed 3D worlds. GIS students can create large terrains that represent real-world areas and present them in a virtual environment. L3DT Professional works directly with Torque 3D to ensure the fidelity of your map designs.

Game Mechanics Kit

Game Mechanics Kit is a package for Torque 3D that provides students and professors the ability to visually edit script. It provides a large number of ready-made components that allow students to quickly and easily add mechanics to their games. The Game Mechanics Kit provides a strong physics system, cut-scene editor, and a large library of gamepay components to help create games more quickly.

Universal AI Kit

Artificial Intelligence can be overwhelming both to teach and to implement into video games. The Universal AI Kit provides a professional level of AI capabilities including chasing, targeting, and avoiding obstacles. For classes that are not ready to tackle Artificial Intelligence this kit allows you to still use AI characters in your game designs. Because the kit includes the full script files for all of the included AI actions it can be used as an introductory or even an advanced Artificial Intelligence teaching tool.
