Torque Game Engine DocumentationVersion 1.3.x |
Now that you are familiar with some of the basic concepts of the Torque Game Engine, you're ready to start learning how to use the engine in detail. The first step in doing that will be to download the engine source-code and get it running on your system. You'll have to get through that, just to set-up the Torque SDK and get to a place where you can start building. Since the set-up guide is very step-by-step and detailed, it can get a little dry. But it's not so bad, and you shouldn't have any problems getting through it. In that chapter's summary, you can see where to go next, no matter what part of the engine you want to learn.
The road you take through learning Torque will depend on what you're trying to do with the engine. Are you out to build a profitable game for business? Or out to create your dream game, without worrying about how viable a business plan you might have? Do you just want to have fun learning about game development with an advanced, fully capable engine? Any of these goals, and more, are very worthwhile and can be enjoyable. This guide is not the all-singing, all-dancing guide to Torque, but it strives to give you a good overview and reference for each piece involved with Torque development. We won't answer every question you can possibly ask, far from it, but you'll end up with a very good feel for how to work with the engine, overall.
So, you started in the right place! Keep reading.
Of course, it would be silly to say that this is the only guide to Torque that exists, or that you'll ever need. A great thing about Torque is that there are so many resources and so much documentation associated with it now. Some of the best additional resources are listed below. After you're done reading the parts of this guide you need to for your particular project, you can check out the following collections of additional resources below to find out where to go next:
These are GarageGames' official collections of resources. But many more resources abound, most of which are created by talented members of the GarageGames community. While we're on the subject of community, you should understand that you have entered one of the best on-line communities that has ever been created. This is a major benefit of being a Torque owner. GG community members are extremely active, and help each other with all kinds of questions and problems-- newbie and experts alike. Please keep in mind, the community needs to be treated with respect, and does not like demands. If you have a question about something, and post a clear, well written, respectful question, you will be amazed at the help you can get. Once you own the engine, you have access to the Torque SDK Owner forums, where engine-related questions can be posted. Also, many Torque masters are available in the GarageGames IRC Channel. Get involved with the community, it's great!
Alright, now read on, and get ready to have fun making your game!!
