How to Create a 3D skybox from a 2D photo using 3dsmax

by Jason Howard · 06/17/2005 (1:47 am) · 3 comments

This tutorial teaches step-by-step ("Barnie-style") how to use a 2D photo of clouds/sky to create a seamless 3d skybox. The illusion of a sky projected onto the inside of a sphere is obtained, even though the sky is really projected onto the inside of a cube.

A pdf version of the tutorial with lots of step-by-step photos is at www.iit.edu/~jasonh/Skybox.pdf (case sensitive, so capitalize the S)

The tutorial uses 3d studio max R4 and any graphics editor.

For those who can't get at the pdf, here's the text-only version:

Excellent, I am trying this out as we speak. Since I just got max, I have been trying to learn it. This will help justify spending all that money. I hope this will work in Max7

I'd love to learn how to do this in blender... any pointers on the key concepts that enabled it?
