A Simple guide to Textures

by James Laker (BurNinG) · 03/03/2004 (5:19 pm) · 7 comments

I'm writing this article because i couldn't find free textures that had some crappy agreements bound to it or i thought was
probably used in 393745 games cause its free... So i was looking
for a few simple textures to see what i can do with Torque.

Lets start:
1) Open up Paintshop Pro 8 and click on the New File Icon or go to
File->New. Now the Image Dimensions should be 512x512 or
256x256... Don't ask me why :) Make sure the Color Depth is
16mil Colours or 24/32 Bit and the Background isn't
transparent. Press okay. You should have something like this on
your screen.

2) Press B (to select brush) And change the brushsize to 60,
Hardness=20, Step=1, Density=100, Thickness=100, Opacity=100,
Blendmode=Normal.

3) Also choose a brownish colour (Brown for sand effect).
Now randomly make circles. Just go crazy... Don't imagine
to see anything realted to your results :) Mine looks like
this:

4) Now go to Effects->Texture Effects->Fine Leather to
open up the dialog box looking like this.

Also change the Settings a bit... Play around...
Transparency should be high! Click on okay, And Boom, we have a
texture :)

5) This one isn't Too nice... but i'll make a texture pack and
upload it somewhere !

Not picking on James, but...

There's a little more work that would need to be done for this to be a usable texture for most work. This is a non-repeating texture. If you apply it to a terrain, for instance, you'll end up with a REALLY ugly set of seams. Same goes for applying it to buildings, etc.

As for the size - use the power of 2 rule. It needs to be 16 x 16, 32 x 32, 64 x 64, 128 x 128, 256 x 256, or 512 x 512 (I THINK Torque can also suppose 1024 x 1024 and higher either out of the box or with some tweaking.)

Not out of the box unless it's different in the latest head. And I might be wrong, but I think only 256x for terrain?

Sorry, I wasn't very specific on that :-) Textures in general need to be powers of 2. For terrain, you are right - however, it's pretty easily changed IIRC (for TZ, we use the default, but, have changed the square size so it's a little more detailed terrain, and the textures look a lot nicer that way.)

Yeah.. i know... That's why it is a "Simple guide to textures" :)

I played around with just those features and found some pretty cool results. Even for seamless tiling.

What about 512x64. Does that waste texture memory?

I love this tutorial! Can you explain what you mean by the size again? thnx so much.

Davis-
What code did you edit to get 512x512 textures on the terrain?
