The Unofficial Torque Public-File-System (3MB uploading!)
by TheGasMan · 03/19/2009 (10:34 pm) · 11 comments

I have gathered a bunch of useful files from blogs and resources over my time as a community member. At times I have informed people of these helpful files only to have them return to me and say "that file is no longer available". Which..is frustrating to everyone.
Long story short:
I have a server with loads of space and BW(both unlimited)...and I will have it for several years...hence the birth of a place to store things for a long, long,...long time. I store files there for people and you can upload 3MB zips, jpgs, gifs or pngs to help people.
"The Unofficial Torque Public File System"
//=========================================
We do need a few RULES:
- The file that is hosted, needs to be legal and can not break any rules or licenses you may have with the copyright's owner.
- The file can NOT contain malicious code/files/apps/*.
- The file must be 3MB or less and can be a .zip (png, jpg and gifs are also allowed)
- By using the system, you agree that you use it at your own risk.
//=========================================
The only place to find publicly uploaded files is here:
torque.abigholeintheweb.com/public_system/useruploads/ AND ONLY that directory specifically.
The other directories in the system are setup by myself and perhaps 1 or 2 other people as time goes on. If you want to add helpful files that are larger than 3MB in a different storage directory...email me with the information and I will do my best to accommodate.
Let's get saving files that will help anyone in this community!

- eb
P.S. I suggest that you append the use of the file into it's name:
Examples: "tgb174_behavior_coolness.zip" or "tgea181_hlsl_warpblur.zip"

@Will Support from GG would be great indeed, but unfortunately I doubt there's a chance. GG dropped community driven stuff like the Blender forums and lost interest in TDN so... :/

We never dropped community driven stuff. We consolidated forums because the old ones were hard to navigate and most of the time new users posted in the wrong area, especially on the art forums. We also did not lose interest in TDN. It has some definite security issues and the content, being community generated like most wiki's, can span the gamut from stellar to really, really bad or incomplete.
I'm not really sure why you seem to think we're not supportive of our community. We've got some amazing dev's around here working on a lot of killer projects. Whenever there's a major web restructuring, things get lost in the mix. Often times they are still there or priorities on the to-do list, but the act of changing them scares people like crazy.
As sad as I was to see Joseph Greenawalt move Blender DTS support to his own forums, I was also happy because it provides a solid ground for him to focus and help people instead of scanning through General Questions or TGB or TGE forums for Blender topics that should have originally been posted in the Blender forum back in the day (and should now be posted in the Artists Corner forum).

- Now they can use my storage and any uploaded files will always be around( at least as long as I am around ;) ).
If I ever decide to drop this server...I will ask for someone to proverbially "receive the torch".
My site is in no way meant as a replacement for anything GG related. It is a site that is meant to help the community to help the community to succeed.(that does make sense, just read it again)
;)

My storage site is for those people that usually host a file on their personal site and then 3 months later they find a new hobby and their site and the file drops off the planet.- Now they can use my storage and any uploaded files will always be around( at least as long as I am around ;) ).

Thankyou from a community member. :-)

eb, A great thing you do. There has been the downloads section on 3dcentral.net too. I agree with you about people who host things on those freebie sites. They need places where they can host their wares where it isn't going to disapear in a month.Thankyou from a community member. :-)

Sounds like a great idea. So basically if I wanted to give out a free model or a tut. I could upload it for anyone to grab?

This is for anyone that wants to store a file for other people to find, whenever they'll need it. Torque related of course.
I currently have saved exporters and some other random items on there. I will slowly add more things that I have found from long days of digging through this massive site's archives while I was trying to learn TGEA inside out. All of the idiosyncratic anomalies and feature-istic what-cha-ma-wtfs has brought me to the conclusion that this engine set needs to be easier to learn and grasp. In the end, Torque is simple, quite simple indeed. ..but digging through years of notes, test, dumps, trials and changes...leads you on a chicken hunt not knowing what|went|where OR why things were chosen to be the way they currently are.
So I hope that the resource will be a place to find those hard-to-search out docs and other learning materials for those that want to get a better grasp and get it faster than 'search, read, investigate, read' ...repeat.
& of course the uses don't stop there.
P.S. Thanks for the posts! I appreciate the comments.

But it would seem irony has hit this post hard... when I try the link I can't seem to load it.
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at torque.abigholeintheweb.com.

This is a great idea. With the issues I've been having with the dts exporter more then half the resources and/or files have been 404ed.But it would seem irony has hit this post hard... when I try the link I can't seem to load it.

I bet the server company is playing "thumb in the bum" again. Should be back in a bit.

nice effort on the web site. Looks like you have a good thing going there. You should seriously talk to Derek or someone in charge at GG here to get this as an dedicated and legit torque storage house for everyone to enjoy and use. I'm more then sure with as friendly as they are, they would back this idea. don't hurt to try. Good luck on getting more people on board with this plan, looks promising. I would like to be the first to step up and say thanks for this, and I will be putting some of my vanished stuff I released freely on here as well.
