Maya -> 3DSMAX -> DTS

I see there is a 3dsmax to dts converter, and I read there is a maya to dts in the works as of last year. But seeing I don't have a maya to dts now, Has anyone tried Maya to 3ds max then to dts? If so is there anything to be watchful for or any settings to have set so it works without a flaw?
Thanks

I wasn't the one who tried using them, and I don't have Maya myself, so I can't describe in detail what the problems were, but I believe the big problem was that the texture mapping didn't come through correctly.

I'd just like to add that our team is doing just that (Maya->FBX->3DS Max 5->DTS) and we are succeeding so far. We have tried textured and un-textured models, animations, skeletons, etc. and it is all quite functional.

I'm curious why you decided to go Maya->FBX->3DS Max5->DTS
instead of Maya->3DS Max5->DTS.
Was there problems with Maya to 3DS Max exporter?

There is no Maya to 3ds max exporter. You must you an intermediate file format like FBX.

I guess I should be more specific. I am not aware of any direct Maya to 3ds max converter. An intermediate format needs to be used.

That is basically the same as the FBX format, except you have to pay for PolyTrans. From their website:Quote:The ability to move scene data bidirectionally between Maya and 3DS MAX via Okino's native "BDF" file format. The transfer is done using the native version of PolyTrans-for-3DS MAX and the native version of PolyTrans-for-Maya. The BDF file format acts as a transparent conduit between the two programs.

Ah ok, that kinda boggles me that there isn't a direct conversion.I appreciate the tip though.

The reasons are obvious. All professional engines now support more of Maya than Max. So where do we stand? Waiting till somebody does an export and is willing to release it.
I think lot of people are willing to pay a small amount of 20-30 USD for such a plug-in instead of buying tha crap software Milkshape or whatever you call it. If there are 100 to buy it, it makes 3000 USD for the programmer plus it's adding a good profile to GG and TGE.
Basically lots of words and nothing done so far...

I know that we need a damn plug in for Maya. Maya is more popular than ever. It's much cheaper and more users than ever switch or stick with Maya. The reasons are obvious. All professional engines now support more of Maya than Max. So where do we stand? Waiting till somebody does an export and is willing to release it.

Can you please leave the "my 3D package is better than..." atttitude at the door, no one cares for it here in the community and there is absolutely no need for it (especially when the comments you make are not even factual).
A plugin is being done by a 3rd party, when its ready it is ready. Bitching, whining, insulting, and other means will not help it get developed any faster, and if you think that it can then perhaps you should put your energy towards creating the exporter yourself.

I've tried Maya on a free trial disk, and it is nice, but like I said, my research leaned towards suggesting max for gaming.
I'm interested in seeing some Maya work in Torque. I'm sure someone will come up with a plug-in "soon". :)
Just my $.02

Well I'm no expert, and I just started 3D modeling about 3 months ago. But before I bought 3DS Max, I researched the web and any book I could find, and the average reply is that Max is better for gaming, and Maya is better for movies. That's just the results of my search. As for Milkshape, it's great for someone on a budget. I think it's a better alternative than using an illegal copy of Max or Maya. I did a lot with it, and found it was easier to learn to use than 3DS Max. In the end, it didn't have all the features I needed, but I still use it today for simple things.
